At what age do you view as being an adult?

Obviously it can range greatly depending on the person and how you define it...but as someone turning 25 in less than a month, I'd have to say that in my late teens/early 20s, I'd always view 25 as the start of "adulthood".

And while at this point of my life I'm more or less where I saw myself, or hoped I'd be coming out of college in terms of career/work, I still have definitely consider myself a "kid".

As it stands I go out 2-3 times every week and get my fair share of drinking on, never had any sort of serious relationship in my life, and have a complete apathetic view of life and everything that goes on around me. It doesn't help that I live in Pacific Beach in San Diego where putting shoes and jeans on is considered dressy, and on any given night you'd find people puking outside of the bars here.

Overall I'd say my mentality is no different than when I was a 21-22 year old in college, and the development of my "life view"--i.e. how I treat life has not grown at all.

So for the folk with more years behind them, was there ever a switch in mentality in your life from getting out of college, and did it just slowly develop over time or was there some sort of trigger point for it to happen?

As a 22 year old about the graduate college, I think when you're working to support yourself and can't just rely on student loans or parents. There is a big brick wall hitting me on Jan 1st and I'd call that adulthood.

If you're old enough to serve in your countries military, I'd say you're an adult IMO.

Yeah to me I don't feel the working world as all that much different from college. In college going to class, studying etc., were what got me financial aid that allowed me to pay for rent, food etc. with the motivation being that if I work hard enough that I'll be rich one day..and since I started working it's been similar, I do it to pay the rent, get food etc. with the hopes that I'll be "rich" one day.

I'm 26 and I still consider myself a "kid." Although I don't consider myself the same as when I was 20-21, go hang out with people that young and you will realise the age difference.

But then again your own perception of yourself and how others view you in the world are completely different.

That's just when they're adults, no one said anything about waiting! 😉

The day you discover and care that the decisions you make or the work that you do has a real effect on other people.

Around 27. You can move out, have kids, support yourself, kill a man, but you'll still be a kid until you hit some epiphany in your late 20s, early 30s.

I'm 22 now, go to college w/student loans without a job, so I definitely consider myself a kid.
But it seems obvious that adulthood should be the point in which one is able to be fully responsible for one's own needs, wants, and actions.

I'll answer an unasked question: when do you begin acting like a (responsible) man?

On average, about 29 or 30.
