What the heck does a basic service include? 4000mi minor inspection?

Oil change, adjust clutch, clean and adjust chain, check steering head for tightness, inspect brakes, check tightness of various bolts, along with a few other relatively minor checks and adjustments. It takes about 2 hours for them to complete according to the service guy at my dealership.

yeah but really they drain your oil, probably refill it, and keep your bike for 2-4 days for no apparant reason...

Those are all things you could easily do yourself. You're getting hosed if you pay $125 for someone to do it.

Why did you get a Fram filter? They are JUNK. Do you not read this forum?

BTW this is why those bike experts on here told you to get a cheap used bike:
Now I really want a bike that I can beat up. I have no fear of falling, but I do have a fear of damaging my expensive bike. I want to have something that I can push to the limit and fall over and over on so I can learn where the limits are.

But if you think about it, you only spent about $4k. Some people spend that much on COMPUTERS! Don't worry about beating it up. Worry about beating yourself up and going to the hospital or dying.

I'd be willing to bet that most people who do it just change the oil and that's it. I did my last service and all I did was change the oil and air filter. My next service is the 14k valve check so I'm taking it in for that.

Honestly, for $125 it's peace of mind that they did all the things they said they did. And I know they adjusted the clutch and cleaned the chain because those are things I can easily see and feel.

is it worth having the dealership do the first maintenance? i called mine up today and they tried assraping me ($330 + parts). partly because the lady on the other end didn't know the different between an FZ6R and R6 ($330 + parts was for the R6). when i bought my bike i could have sworn they said $220 + parts.

i checked my chain and it's still tight, so it doesn't need adjustment there. gotta do oil/filter change. that's easy enough on my own. i don't see why i can't clean/lube the chain - the guide i saw made it look pretty easy.

Not to nitpick, but your chain shouldn't be tight, it should have a significant amount of slack in it. You do adjust it to make sure that it's not too loose, but slack is always better than a tight chain.

Ok, that sounds about right. South Texas Suzuki (place I'm getting my new tires put on) wanted about that much for a 4000mi service. I'll probably do the oil @ 2000mi myself, but at this point, I'd feel better having them to my first service.

Just want to get back on my bike and go for a good ride. Only been 4 days but it feels like longer, and you've got to factor in that I lost an entire weekend worth of riding.

I've seen a Triumph riding around base here but didn't know what type (Speed, Street, Street R). Finally tracked it down and it's a Street Triple. God it's such a badass looking bike, I can't imagine how awesome the Triple R looks. It is a real compact sucker though. Didn't know how "small" it was until I had my GS500 next to it.

sorry, i meant tight as in "on the tight side of the specs." chain play is supposed to be 45-55mm for my bike. i measured it at 45mm the other day, so it just needs cleaning, not an adjustment.

Yeah, its really easy, but please don't be one of those guys that discovers how much easier it is to do with the bike on a stand and the engine idling.

It really isn't worth a few fingers to not have to turn the tire yourself.

The Street Triple R is just a Street Triple with better suspension. The Street Triple is based on the Daytona 675 which is a great race bike so it is of similar proportions but a more relaxed/upright riding position. Still, the Street Triple makes over 100hp so it is not a beginner's bike.

It is easy, it's just messy.

Everytime I've taken my bike in for service I've gotten it back the same day.

Very much so. Here is a guy who thought it would be a good idea to have the engine idling while cleaning the chain.

The first service is one of the most important services IMO. There are a lot of things to check at that time to make sure nothing has loosened up too much. Yes, I'd have the dealership do it but that price you were quoted does seem high. I think mine cost around $250 and I had it done with about 700 miles on the bike.

It helps come resale time if you have all the reciepts from a qualified mechanic too.

that's what i figured -first maintenance is the most important.

i'll have to call them up again and double check. like i said, the lady i talked to didn't know the difference between an FZ6R and an R6 and quoted me the R6 price.

Yeah... that makes me shiver every time I see it... and I think about it every time I get close to my motorcycle chain. Don't have the heart to flame him. I've done some dumb stuff, and one time I almost cut my leg above the knee with a chainsaw (somehow it only cut my jeans and left my leg untouched). Working with chainsaws has made me extremely nervous about having my fingers anywhere near a moving chain of any sort. I turn the wheel/chain by hand for cleaning, but have the bike idling for lubing because my hands aren't anywhere near the chain at that point.

Fuzzy hasn't visited in a couple of days. Is he in the hospital already or what?

Krozey too, maybe they are sharing a suite at the local medical center? :p

PSA: I'm still alive and so is my 848. ;)

I'm alive. Just rode 100 miles last night in the cold and drizzle trying to break in the bike more, revving from 4-12k. That took a while. Had a 4AM shivering breakfast at Denny's. I want to get to at least 550 miles so I can bring it in for the routine maintenance on Saturday. BTW, cost of maintenance in California, in bumble fuck Tracy California is $175, which includes labor and parts for oil change as well. I told them I would do my own oil change and that dropped the price down to $100 - talk about a freaking expensive oil change.

BTW, my friend who is a nurse said that based off of her experience in the emergency room, the one piece of gear you should get besides helmet and boots is back plating. Everyone should be getting their armadillos on. Just bought one a few days ago myself.

My jacket included armor at all the important points (elbows, shoulders, back, chest). Maybe you should have bought a better jacket from the beginning? And how frickin long did 100mi take you to ride? That's MAYBE a 2hr ride (more like an hour and half).
