at the bank ATM

I frequently make cash deposits at my bank's atm and was wondering how the people who collect the atm deposit-envelopes knows it's your money that's been deposited when you don't enclose a deposit slip telling them your name/account info. Sure, you inserted your atm card and inputted all the necessary info to let the machine know, but what prevents unscrupulous people :) from telling the atm they enclosed more money than they actually did?

I'm guessing that the atm machine somehow labels the envelope with all the info so that when the bank person opens it up he/she knows who and how much was supposed to have been deposited.

You know the two loud noises you hear after you insert the envelope? That's the ATM printing on to your envelope

do not ever deposit cash in an atm. there is no protection. so, even if unscrupulous people try to cheat the bank, they are the ones who get screwed.

Oh I'm sorry, you're right, it's an extremely secure and smart way to deposit money. Retard.

And it's always at the same bank, and always on a routine basis. Oh and I always get a printed receipt from the ATM!! :)

I read about an issue with this before. I asked at my bank and they claim that all envelopes are opened and counted on video. As a saftey precaution, I usually count the money and seal the envelop directly infront of the video-camera in the atm, and the following day I always double check to make sure the balance is correct. Nonetheless, I wouldn't exceed $1000.00 for a cash deposit in an atm.

Isaac that's smart thing to do, taking care of business in front of the cam.

And what's nice is my bank has online banking so I'm able to see my deposit show up online 5-10 minutes after I make the atm deposit, which to me is amazing example of technology integration :)

Do you realize how many businesses put their money in a bag and drop it through a door that works more or less the same way as a mailbox? That's basically the same as depositing through an ATM. Your money will never be opened by a single individual, and there will most likely be cameras in the room. You're paranoid. Do you know people who have been screwed by depositing in an ATM?

Alright, one isolated incident. My parents have put $5000+ in the night drop every day for the last 20 years and have never had any money missing. Many other business owners do the same thing. I'm sure it's not common to have your money stolen when you deposit through an ATM. I wouldn't chose it over going to the teller when the bank is open, but banks don't exactly keep good hours. :)

i once deposited two checks in one envelope into a washington mutual ATM. i added the amounts wrong and under deposited. i called to check on it and they said "oh we will correct it."

yeah right.

of course the second time i did (because i'm a math genius) they actually corrected it. once again, i deposited two checks and added it too low.

moral of the story? if i did this with cash there is really NO way to prove it. that is exactly why i go inside the bank to deposit all cash amounts, even if i have to get up early and hope i'm the first customer at 8am so i can get to work at 830, or fight the saturday morning crowd.

I lost $600+ this way. I used to always deposit money through the ATM at wells fargo last year, I even deposited close to $1000 one time. I thought it was safe etc. because of the video taping. Well it's NOT. If you guys want to read the whole story just click the link Rossman provided in the post above. But to make a long story short, I'm out $600+ because I deposited money in the ATM and the bank claims I only deposited $6. Thats why I will NEVER deposit money in an ATM again.

You should deposit ALL currency transactions (cash & coins) with a teller and never at the ATM.

The chances of a screw up are minimal but I'm not one to gamble with my hard earned money unless I'm in area code 702.

That's not too good of an idea if there's a scary dude with a gun standing behind you. ;)
