SBC bought AT&T and has decided to kill Cingular.

wtf... why???

I also thought cingular bought the wireless division off at&t... how does SBC still have a say in it if cingular owns it? I'm not quite up on how all this spinning companies off and how much power the parent company still has over them...

Wondering the same thing. If the wireless section was spun off, how does SBC buying the "parent" company change the "spun off" part..... isn't the wireless division seperate now? I'm clearly missing something. Regardless, seems silly to switch back to the ATT name, must be a brand image thing.

Edit: This helps some.

Waste of time and effort imo.. if I owned stock I'd be pissed. But I don't, so I don't care too much.

quoting USA Today

Cingular will be sold under name of AT&T
By Leslie Cauley, USA TODAY
NEW YORK ? SBC (SBC), which closed its merger with AT&T on Friday, plans to sell Cingular Wireless under the fabled AT&T name, Ed Whitacre, the chairman and CEO of the combined company, has confirmed to USA TODAY.

Cingular, the USA's No. 1 wireless company, is 60% owned by the new AT&T; BellSouth controls 40%.

SBC recently said it would adopt AT&T's name, putting to rest questions about what would happen to the famous name. But speculation had also swirled about what would happen to the Cingular brand name once the AT&T deal closed.

In an interview with USA TODAY on Friday, Whitacre left no doubt about his plans. Asked if the company planned to drop the Cingular name in favor of the AT&T brand, Whitacre said, "Yes, we do."

Whitacre said AT&T might still use the Cingular name in some markets. But the overall plan, he said, is to use the AT&T name to market all the company's products ? local, long-distance, wireless, data and video.

He conceded that the move could strain AT&T's relationship with BellSouth. The two carriers have worked to promote Cingular as a national brand. But for now at least, BellSouth isn't resisting.

BellSouth spokesman Jeff Battcher says anything that boosts Cingular's revenue is good for BellSouth. "This is not an issue," he said Sunday.

Whitacre also sees a silver lining, of sorts, for BellSouth. If the switch to the AT&T name helps attract customers to the wireless company, he noted, both carriers will benefit.

I guess it's all about brand value. The name AT&T has been around much longer than Cingular

Does that mean that my Cingular contract will be void?

no that means you will get crappier service

You missed my point. The contract was between me and Cingular. There is no mentioning of ATT.

SBC and BellSouth owns cingular. and SBC is the bigger of the two.

i would be very surprised if a BellSouth SBC merger was not announced relatively soon.

MaBell is back.

yeah, the link above explained it. I didn't know SBC owned 60% of cingular. I find it funny the spin off bought the parent up.. and is basically reforming... ha. mabell is back indeed.. but has a hell of a lot more competition.

Because it is quite a bit more expensive. They do have the best service in LA area though.

how much is a 500 minute shared plan everywhere else ? For Verizon, the regular rate is $39/mo. for first line + $10 per additional line. I stuffed 4 total phones into the 500 minute plan ever since they dropped to $10/additional line... awesome price.

T-Mobile is the only wireless company that lets me have a family plan that allows me to have a phone in one area code, while my wife, who's 2000 miles away has her phone in her home area code. I'd move to another carrier in a minute if I could, since the T-mobile coverage in her area isn't that great, but I'm kinda stuck for now.

Verizon should let you do that. My brother is in CA and I'm in NY... he could change if he wanted to. I inquired about it once.

actually, it's SBC (ATT) vs Verizon. everyone else will eventually get swallowed up. i dont' see how BellSouth or whatever bell they have in the Midwest can stand up to SBC and Verizon, the two are just too big now.

also, MCI Worldcom won't be able to stand too long either without merging with one of the Baby bells, this i'm sure.

interesting times.
