If you bought a PPC or Blackberry privately (not through AT&T), it is said that you can get away with the $15/mo MediaNet plan as long as you don't go crazy on the usage. AT&T can tell what device you have if they are so inclined to find out by looking up your phone's IME number. That's why you don't go crazy with the $15 plan.

There is no difference between the $30 and $15 plan. They both access the same servers the same way.

When I got my iPhone I signed up for the $15 unlimited plan and got a text message the next day warning me that I needed to sign up for the $30 plan. They were all over me on that one!

Edit: I bought my iPhone off eBay

You have a datacard? Tethering is connecting to the net through your phone, and is usually cheaper than a datacard plan.

Why exactly do people pay for that? I know on my Treos at least you've always been able to just do it. Is it locked out on other phones or what?
I'm not sure about other providers, but with Alltel I think you can tether w/out a data plan and just have it count toward your minutes. You're not really supposed to do this, but as long as you don't use a lot of bandwidth I don't think they really care. At least last I heard they haven't bothered cracking down on people for this.

But EVDO is my primary internet and I use probably 20-30GB/mo on average. It's not like I'm just doing light web browsing on my phone, so I couldn't really get away with not having a data plan.

AT&T is really particular when it comes to iPhones. Something about apple getting a slice of the pie when it comes to the data plans.

I really don't think it matters whether the phone is 3G or not. They figure since you have a data phone you're gonna use more data hence making you pay for the higher plan.

I can only comment on Verizon. With both my 8703e and my Storm it is not possible to tether with my computer unless I pay the $15/mo tethering fee. Since my company pays for it I don't really care and it comes in extremely handy for when I'm on the road.

With regard to tethering costing less than getting a data card, that's not exactly true. My data plan for my BlackBerry is $45 since I attach to a BES and the tethering fee is $15 which brings the total to $60 (exactly the same cost as a data card). If I didn't have a use for the BlackBerry but I needed internet access on my laptop I would definitely get a data card instead of a tethering plan.

Original iPhone was $20/month, including 200 texts
I now pay $30/month, not including any texts - options are 200 for $5, 1500 for $15, or unlimited texts for $20. Family plan unlimited text is $30.

Is there a point in talking about any phone besides the iPhone?!

Reason I asked is because I have an original iPhone running on the $15 media net - works fine because I am spoofing the IMEI from an old phone, but I haven't been able to upgrade to the 2.x firmware because of the lack of IMEI options. I'm worried that AT&T would frown upon the original iPhone and the $15 media net plan, although I haven't specifically seen anything to suggest that.

Considering that your data plan alone costs more than my entire cellphone plan (which does include unlimited data, or maybe there's a 5GB cap, whatever)...then yes, there IS a point in talking about other phones that aren't as pointlessly expensive.

Don't worry, I'm sure you can pick up a lot more dudes with the iphone, though.
