Also keep in mind that it's not unlimited (capped at 5GB/mo), so be mindful of bandwidth usage if you plan to use the phone for data tethering. Just for web browsing and email on your phone, though, you shouldn't come close to 5GB.

nowhere on what I signed did it say capped to 5GB. It may be now, but I signed the contract for unlimited internet and that's what I get until the contract expires.

Probably overselling. Like what web hosts do. I see hosts offering you 9999999TB of space, yet I doubt they even have that much on the server let alone enough for each client.

Sounds like it. Are you on a family plan or business? Personal folks are stuck with $30 for net, and $15 for unlimited text.

Doesn't matter what the terms were when you signed. AT&T can change them whenever they want. If you don't think they can, call them up and ask.

PDA/BlackBerry plans with Tethering may be used to tether such PDA and BlackBerry devices to a Personal Computer. If you are on a data plan that does not include a monthly megabyte allowance and additional data usage rates, the parties agree that AT&T has the right to impose additional charges if you use more than 5 GB in a month. Prior to the imposition of any additional charges, AT&T shall provide you with notice and you shall have the right to terminate your service.

I don't have the tethering service, that was a completely different thing when I signed up.

That's not the only clause in the terms of service talking about the 5 gigabyte limit. Read up a bit on it.

Yeah, 5GB cap is pretty much the industry standard now it seems. I think Alltel was the only major provider with truly unlimited data (or if there's an unstated cap, it's much higher than 5GB), and now that Verizon bought them up, the ToS will probably be changed to include Verizon's data cap.

5GB/mo isn't a problem for phone data IMO, there's not much you can do on a phone that sucks up that kind of bandwidth. Some people in rural areas use 3G as their primary internet connection, though, and 5GB/mo is really pushing it for that kind of usage.

I never understood how companies are allowed to falsely advertise a service, but if an individual business owner tried to pull this off they'd end up in court.

"Come to my corner store and you can get unlimited pepsi for 5$, with max of 3 bottles."

That's basically what they're doing. I see this out of pretty much every ISP, whether it's internet or hosting.

You have a datacard? Tethering is connecting to the net through your phone, and is usually cheaper than a datacard plan.

Also, Alltel charges $10/mo for unlimited data tethering. I'm going to miss that.

edit: Actually looks like smartphone tethering is now $15/mo and other handsets are $30/mo (previously was $10 and $25). Guess we were grandfathered in at $10/mo, though.

AT&T is:

Unlimited texting (including MMS) individual - $20/mo, Family - $30/mo
MediaNet non smartphone - $15/mo per line (there is no Family data options)
MediaNet PDA/Blackbery - $30/mo per line (there is no Family data options)

If you bought a PPC or Blackberry privately (not through AT&T), it is said that you can get away with the $15/mo MediaNet plan as long as you don't go crazy on the usage. AT&T can tell what device you have if they are so inclined to find out by looking up your phone's IME number. That's why you don't go crazy with the $15 plan.

There is no difference between the $30 and $15 plan. They both access the same servers the same way.

Why exactly do people pay for that? I know on my Treos at least you've always been able to just do it. Is it locked out on other phones or what?

I think $30 is for 3G, the old iphone one has the cheaper rate.
