AT&T-$500 Bill- UPDATE: not $500 but still screwed

I had called AT&T before and talked about changing my rate plan, since I moved recently and it'd be cheaper to change the rate plan and pay off the remaining months in my contract than to cancel my contract, but because any change would be retroactive, decided not to change the plan until after the billing cycle. Looks like the representative changed it anyway and now I have a $500 bill. This is the THIRD frigging time something like this has happened. I just moved, don't have a job yet, and have been precariously watching the bottom line, and this could screw me up big time if I can't sort it out. I'm too upset to call and deal with it right now.
 
Dispute it.

Be persistent, firm but not a hot head.

I think we've all had telecomm horror stories. I'll tell you about the time MCI cashed my check and didn't credit my account.

EVEN AFTER I FAXED THE CREDITED CHECK TO THEM 3 TIMES!

This isn't about that. From what she has described, these are contract cancellation fees and fees resultant from a change in rate plan (a change which should not have been made) that was retroactive.

Usually changing the rate plan starts the contract all over again. Is that what they are charging you for?

DAMNIT! I called, and they told me that even though she changed the rate plan when she hadn't been told to, her notes didn't say that. SO, they can change my plan so the $530 charge doesn't show up on my bill BUT it means renewing the contract for twelve months ON A PHONE THAT DOESN'T FRIGGEN WORK AT MY HOUSE and I can't cancel the contract at any point without incurring the $530 charge.

So, in short, I pay them $260 total ($40 for the first month, $20 for the following twelve months) and they don't charge me $500 for their mistake.

I have never been so upset and frustrated in my life!!!!!!! I don't have this money, at all. I'm still looking for a job.

Now you didn't say that before. If your phone truly does not work at your house due to poor coverage, etc., there are ways to deal with that.

I had every intention of honoring my contract. I had a contract paying a certain amount. I called and discussed changing that to a lower amount, which is perfectly allowable. They changed it without telling me and then charged me for the minutes I went over. Then they made me sign another contract for another year to avoid paying the overcharge on the change I didn't want.

Maybe a letter saying that the contract was canceled without her authorization? Read the thread for pete's sake. Here's an outline for those of you who are "a little slower" than average.

HC talks with AT&T about changing the rate plan and thus cancelling her then-current contract.
HC is told that it will be more expensive to do that than it will be to keep her current contract until it expires.
HC tells the representative NOT TO CANCEL her account.
AT&T representative cancels the account anyway.
AT&T charges HC an absurd amount of money because AT&T can't hire representatives who will listen to the customer.

I have recently discovered how crappy ATT wireless is myself. The nice new Nokia 6800 phone would cost a new customer $50 up front. That includes activation, everything.... For an existing customer, say 4 years of loyalty, it costs $150. Any fsckin sense in that? Luckily my contract is up on the 18th of September.

HC also has a publishing representative job and her writers and editors need to be able to get a hold of her no matter where she is. Legitimate uses for cellular telephones do exist you know.

When we get our house, we're eliminating the land line and strictly using cell phones. We already use our cell for ALL long distance calling. We'll have free cell to cell, so we'll have minutes to talk to each other when we're out and enough "any time" minutes to cover any calls that would normally be made on any given day.

Not that big of a deal, really.

HC has no job. If an employer requires you to have a cell, they'll also pay for it. Calling cards are about 5 cents per minute. Funny, but I NEVER hear these kids with cells permanently attached to their heads, talking to mommy or daddy...
 
Well, if you're willing to live with the damage to your credit rating... you could simply refuse to pay them.

that is pretty fscked up what they did to you. that is the same reason i cancelled my account with them about a year ago.
