I picked up a new Sony RX100 V last week and got to try it out a bit this weekend.

LOL, Nala looks like my co-workers headed for the door when 3:00pm rolls around, while the Huskey is me in the smoke shack, taking my 3 o'clock break, having to stay over, watching them leave.

Nice! Tack sharp and excellent shots.
Thanks! I'm something of a pixel peeper, so I wasn't sure what to expect with it on my D5200. I have to say that especially for a zoom, the sharpness wide open and at 400mm is quite good, and the optical image stabilization is just magic. I'm not particularly steady when it comes to that, so I was pretty amazed to find it completely usable at 400mm even at lower shutter speeds, was not expecting that at all. I haven't been blown away by the stabilization on other lenses like this before, but granted I did expect more with them being shorter focal lengths and all.

Owl couple number two:

Mama

The stick is right in front of the nest, no getting around it.

Papa

So far, no chick sightings for either pair. Last year there were fuzzballs peeking out of the nests by April 12.

Some early shots with the new Sigma 100-400:

Color me impressed. At least at the resolution you posted, they look sharp.
The dog running at you is most impressive. I had the D5200 with my 70-200 f/4, and it was incredibly hit-and miss for nailing focus ( usually back-focusing. )

Thanks, glad you like it! I seem to have a defective copy which is a shame (keep getting "lens not attached" error, some others have reported the same issue). When it's working it seems to work well, I just hope the replacement will be all good.

My first impressions are in line with reviews, which say it's pretty good to excellent optically, especially considering its price ($699 USD). I was actually expecting much softer results, I am far from the steadiest. If you care for the pixel peeping, you can find all of the EXIF intact with full-resolution downloads available at https://www.flickr.com/photos/durbonpix/albums/72157667239169618

I wouldn't consider my images as a benchmark for this lens, but I have been pleasantly surprised so far. It definitely has me wanting to get out there every day, which is probably the most important part!

Also awesome owl shot @IronWing !

Photos taken with my Nikon D5200 and Tamron AF 28-300mm F/3.5-6.3 XR Di LD Aspherical [IF] MACRO (A061) - handheld, no tripod
Paid $215 (display at Target, no battery, no charger, no strap - July 2014 - 1243 shutter releases) and $6.99 for the lens at a thrift shop. Owned the lens before the camera. ;)

Both great horned owl nests I know of have chicks now. This one is in the first nest I posted above. There are at least two chicks and maybe three so far.

I like it. Cats are better looking than people anyway. Your kitty is very cooperative. Our guys take off when they see the camera now as they don't like the flash, except Impy who is blind so he doesn't see it coming :D

wtf is that circle doing there? I guess I musta clicked randomly with the brush when I was trying to blot out the phone and address on his collar tag in Paint. Can't believe I didn't see it until now.

I see no circle???
The "circle" is on the cat's purple tag - you'd have to view the image at 100% and look specifically at the purple tag. You'll see where the cats id's were blurred and the "circle" is some sort of stamp.
It's not distracting or noticeable unless the photographer brings your attention to it... ahem.

Got it - looks like it captured something from your editing software. Could be an effort to provide for the cat's privacy. :)
