Upside to a manual:
The car never does anything stupid. Automation is bad.
Well unless you drive a RWD vehicle and shift in the wrong moment...
So AT isn't that bad at all....
I had to drive an automatic as my last company car. I caused 2 non-collision accidents because of the automatic. Both times was because I had to hurry up, and instead of the car accelerating when I gave it gas, it decelerated. Because I wanted it to open the throttle, but there is no way of telling an auto to do that. You have the one "go faster" pedal that controls too many fucking things. So I gave it gas, instead of accelerating, it does it's hour long shifting ritual instead of just opening the throttle, so I lose speed instead of gaining it, and I cut two people off that had to get on the brakes to avoid hitting me.
Sorry, but either your Automatic was crap (or no real automatic at all) or it's broken.
But I rather think that you made something wrong.

What car was it?
A VW with its new wondertransmission DSG?

So if you are stupider than the computer inside an auto tranny, get an auto. If you are smart enough to know what you want the car to be doing, get a manual. Personally, I think if you can't drive a manual, that should be enough proof that you shouldn't be able to drive. But considering a good 99.9% of the driving population doesn't know how anything works (anything.), have fun swerving away from scary ass FWD owners.

Son, if you can't get an automatic to accelerate you've got some very serious deficiencies in your driving ability. I have never in my life driven an automatic that didn't kickdown immediately when the throttle was floored; even a Prius, which is dog slow to begin with, kicks down and accelerates when the throttle is floored.

Your story makes it sound much more like you're an incompetent driver who is blaming the car rather than his own lack of skill.

It's not really complex. A manual is more fun. Unless you have a lot of big hills, treacherous offroading, etc.

If you buy a sports car, of course it should be manual, otherwise why are you buying the sports car?

Automatic. Only time I'd buy a manual these days is for a huge price difference, or a sports car. Unless it's a sports car, I don't want to be bothered with shifting.

This.
Manual transmissions in day to day bumper to bumper traffic SUCKS!!! Unless I'm going to get the car half off, I won't get another stick unless it is a sports car.

This pretty much confirms I need a basic daily driver and a fun car for my time off.
I used to say I need a Prius for work and errands, and a Jeep for the weekends.
Now I'm thinking I may need a fun-mobile like a Pontiac GTO or Nissan GTR or something similar.

Get whatever you like better. For 99% of people, auto is better in practically every way.

I've driven a bunch of cars and have never had an automatic slow down when I've given it gas. I've had some that were clunky in shifts or would shift at weird times but never where a car would slow down.

There may be a split second hiccup in power when it does a downshift but if you're complaining that that was big enough to cause an accident there's one of three things going on:
1. You're an idiot
2. You're trying to drive so close to the limit that a split second matters (see #1). If that's the case I highly doubt a manual would have saved you, I'd bet the automatic would have shifted as fast if not faster than you could have shifted gears. Also, because you apparently think you're a great driver (obviously you must be if you aren't causing the accidents, the car failed you!) I would bet you'd either spaz out and miss the shift or just stomp the gas without downshifting. Either way you'd be far worse off than just stomping the gas in an automatic.
3. You're driving a car that has some very large mechanical problem (see #1). This may be due to you trying #2 repeatedly.

Automatic.

If you ever plan on eating, or answering the phone, or looking at a map, or anything in your car.... you can't do it with one hand on the wheel and one hand on the shifter.

Speak for yourself kid.

I've never owned an automatic and I have no issues mulitaskin in the car.

Automatics are for women.

I fucking hate automatic transmissions. Even in heavy traffic they're an absolute mess, and don't even get me started about trying to get off an exit ramp into a merging lane.

Anyone who likes automatics over manuals has never driven a manual or is a little cock sucking bitch.

err, most people do that merging manoeuvre everyday and they seem to be doing fine.

Well guess what? You control when you shift with a MT, so it doesn't shift at the wrong time. Imagine fucking that. So an AT is FUCKING AWFUL. Thanks for bringing that up. I forgot to mention you cannot EVER approach 100% in a corner because you never know when your AT is going to shift.

Sorry, but either your Automatic was crap (or no real automatic at all) or it's broken.
