A better analog is to buy a shitty THQ game at Best Buy. Would you stop buying games from Best Buy or would you stop buying games from THQ.

Steam = Best Buy
THQ = THQ

If I buy a product from a store that does not work, and that store does not rectify the situation, you better believe that I won't be going back to that store. It is funny that you mention Best Buy, since I go out of my way to avoid that place for pretty much that reason. (They are known for very poor customer support, much like Steam)

was really hoping this would work for me, since I can barely play TF2 due to the crazy packet loss/lag spikes I have been getting. Unfortunately I made this change, but it almost seemed worse after doing so.

I followed the instructions near the bottom of the OP, but is there something else I need to do to get this fix working correctly?

Thanks.

KT

Looks like he already tried it...

Not really helpful, but I have a problem with Steam. The problem is mostly because Steam uses IE and my IE is borked bringing Steam down with it. My problem with IE is that my Windows Partition is borked with Bad Sectors. My Windows Partition is borked with Bad Sectors because my HD is borked and waiting for me to confirm my Shopping Cart contents. My Shopping Cart contents are not Confirmed because I'd rather Save my $ for a Full Upgrade and so far my System keeps functioning as long as I don't use IE(rarely do anyway) or Steam.

Just a little related to OP Tail of Fail. :)

My building is hard-wired with fibre, so I just plug the cabel from my PC to the wall and that is that. I have been unable to find NIC drivers for my rig after a bunch of searching.

So, are you saying that you have no access to the router to the ISP? Are you handed Private Class addresses, and someone else maintains a router for the building? Or do you have a public address?

I could see an issue with traffic shaping there if so.

I understand most of the words you used, but that post makes no sense to me. :hmm: o_O :D

basically someone might be messing with your bandwidth. they could be recognizing steam traffic and limiting/throttling it in some way. god knows why though, MP games don't take up too much bandwidth generally.

I don't think that's the case. I do not have any issues with any other downloading or internet things and it also just started a week or so ago, so that seems unlikely.

Each condo is wired separately for fibre, it's not as if we share.

Steam = B&M store

THQ = product on shelf of store.

You've made my day. Twice now different people have proven you're an idiot with clear cut analogy's and you still havent caught on.

Brilliant! Keep em coming!

If you have any other online games, especially shooters i'd suggest you try those to confirm it is not related to steam only games.

If the problem is not isolated to steam games, but apparently windows 7 hates your ISP. Also a re-install of OS is another thing to try.

Eventually, he'll run out of both stores AND products. Maybe we'll get lucky and all the ISPs and phone companies will piss him off and he won't have Internet anymore. :awe:

Since it's a new install of win 7, have you tried the "Leaktrix Latency Fix?"

Google that string, it's a script that may or may not help people with their online gaming pings. It helped me quite a lot with one particular mmo (aion) but has not been exceptionally noticable in anything else.

I just Googled it and it seems it is always discussing WoW, but I can't really click through to most sites since anything referencing gaming is blocked at work.

I'll check it out when I get home though, thanks. I am trying to avoid a re-install of Windows if I can.

Failing that, maybe time to purchase some new hardware, though to be honest I do not really feel like dropping close to $600 just to play a couple of games. :\

KT

trust me its worse when you have top tier hardware and it still doesnt work.

:hmm:

@ that point u have no where else to goto.

Registered just to post here.

When I moved into my current apartment I had two options for internet - DSL or Cable from the company the complex had a contract with. I went with the cable and it was the worst mistake I ever made. I was able to download files just fine, but when I tried to play any online games my pings were atrocious with horrible packetloss. I contacted the company and told them my problem. They said to "Contact Steam." I laughed at the tech rep (it wasn't his answer, he was told that by a higher up tech) because at the time I was mainly playing UT2004 without Steam (I only mentioned Steam because I also played TF2).

So this went on for a month. Service tech came out a few times, checked my connections, blah blah blah. Eventually I was tired that I couldn't play any games and did a tracert using VisualRoute. I got the phone number of one of my hops and talked to them about the problem.

They said my company (INC Group) was overloading their servers and needed to upgrade severely. This explained why I was pinging over 300ms to Orlando, the city I live in. Needless to say, I switched to DSL and couldn't be happier.

Do some tracerts to some servers you play on in TF2 and see where your connection screws up.

Why would you immediately blame Steam for an internet problem anyway?

I guess I'm not the only one.

I've definitely ticked at Steam right now.

3 of the THQ complete pack games I've tried don't work (That's on top of not being able to gift the games that were duplicates):

Full Spectrum Warrior is a slide show.

Juiced 2 won't even start; I click on the Icon, get a cursor for a second... and then nothing.

Red Faction freezes almost instantly.

I've googled and looked for fixes - no luck. I've also tried re-downloading and verifiying the files. My older Steam games all work fine.

No more Steam for me for now. I'll go D2D if anything.

It clearly stated that if you purchased the pack but already owned some of the games that you would not get duplicates for gifting. Get mad, sure, but Steam told you this before purchasing.

Sounds like a lot of PEBKAC to me.

My internet is not cable, it's fibre and it is the only internet my provider offers. Our condo is hard-wired with it, with each unit getting a direct link to the mothership. It does not work the same way as what you stated.

I have been on this internet for about 4 years now and it has never had anything even remotely close to this issue (it only started about 2 weekks ago, which is about 2 weeks after I installed new hardware and Windows 7). I am almost 100% certain it is not my ISP, but after reading everything here and investigating elsewhere, it probably has something to do with Win 7 and my mohterboard (or some other component) even though others here and elsewhere have been using these components without issue.

Once I have time this weekend I will probably do a full re-install as nothing else has worked yet. Failing that I will have to start doing some shopping.

Have you tried a different nic to see if that helps any? Can pick them up real cheap if you need to.

Also, a bit confused about your internet. So basically you plug straight in the wall and the 'modem' is somewhere else in the building? Do you have any way of accessing it through the admin panel? Could be some sort of port issue. With my ISP my modem came all setup with stuff, but I DMZ'd it real quick to my router.

I'll check around for a nic. Worth a shot.

I'm kind of confused how it could be my internet when all other tests and whatnot show it is ok. Downloads are not impacted and there are no other issues aside from some games. I'm no expert on this stuff of course, so maybe I am just not understanding correctly. :hmm:

Downloads wouldn't be affected to much by latency, at least not in terms of your speed. Sure, if you get some really high pings and it might time out. I'm just wondering if your isp changed some setting blocking certain ports, which is causing issues with your games. It happens sometimes when they want to try and control some aspect of their network.

I'll give them a call later to see.

Wouldn't the ping test from above have noticed an issue?

Maybe, maybe not. Try ping testing other servers, traceroutes to other places in the US, etc before calling. See if theres any issue getting to other parts of the US. Seems most servers tend to be in Dallas, Atlanta, and West coast. So I'd start there.
