At my wit's end with Steam.

Let's see, where to begin. I'll just go point form, because I will get angry if I go full prose.

1. Installed Windows 7 Ultimate 64 about 3 weeks ago or so (had just installed a new hard drive and a HD5770 vid card a couple days prior). All with no issues.

2. Approximately a week ago I started to get really bad lag/packet loss in TF2. My pings would spike up to 200+ and the game would skip, making it unplayable. Every time I press 'tab' to check the leader table, the game skips. To sum up, the game is unplayable now. Also happening in CS:S and I think in The Witcher (I can't see my guy actually striking the enemies, the guy's just seem to die).

3. I had Avira running the entire time plus I always use NoScript while on the web. Did a full scan with Avira (also switched to MSE and did a full scan with that) then used CrapCleaner and Spybot S&D, but nothing was found in the way of viruses or anything else.

4. Completely uninstalled and re-installed Steam and the games. Did not help.

5. I posted in this thread at the Steam forums: http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=791112&page=3 No help.

6. I tried this fix: http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1043281 Did not help at all and actually seemed to make things worse.

7. My current rig:

Mobo: Intel Badaxe 2 LGA775

CPU: C2D E6600

GPU: HD5770

HDD: Western Didigital Caviar 1TB

Case: LIAN-LI V Cool PC-V1200 A-PLUS Silver EATX

PSU: ThermalTake Tough Power 1200W

RAM: Corsair Value Select PC2-4200 4GB 4X1GB DDR2-533

OS: Windows 7 Ultimate 64

Everything else on my PC works fine and I have so much stuff (files, music, etc.) on here now I really do not want to re-install Windows 7 just because Steam is being a bitch. I have to assume it's Steam, since nothing else is having issues.

Anyway, looking for help, or any thoughts as I have most of my games on here and would love to actually play some of them.

Thanks in advance.

Why would you assume it's Steam, if your other Steam games aren't having issues as well?

Also happening in CS:S and I think in The Witcher (I can't see my guy actually striking the enemies, the guy's just seem to die).
Those are both Steam games (the only other ones I have installed right now).

Why couldn't it be your internet connection?

No other issues with it that I have noticed. I played some LOTRO and it did not slow or stutter at all. Other downloads and whatnot have not been impacted. :\

Well since LOTRO is a mmo, it handles high pings differently. Downloads also won't be affected by fluctuating pings. Try another online FPS game that does not use Steam.

Its not steam, but something else. But keep on blaming steam. Its like hating on Sony, its cool.

Very helpful, thanks.

I have been one of the biggest Steam proponents ever and still am. I am saying it's Steam related because that is the only issue I am having.

Just found Crysis in my storage area. Guess I'll give that an install and see how it goes.

Also, you've tried with no virus stuff whatsoever, and firewall is okay? Also, different servers are like this?

Did not try with everything off, but it was working all fine up until about a week ago. Fully allowed through the firewall and all of that, no slowdowns whatsoever. This is why I originally thought I had a virus or something, but everything came up clean. Totally stumped.

All servers I tried are like this.

try it will all virus protection/firewalls disabled, just to rule that out. an update to one of them could go completely unseen by you, but could be causing the problem. Also try a hard router reset if you haven't.

I guess I'm not the only one.

I've definitely ticked at Steam right now.

3 of the THQ complete pack games I've tried don't work (That's on top of not being able to gift the games that were duplicates):

Full Spectrum Warrior is a slide show.

Juiced 2 won't even start; I click on the Icon, get a cursor for a second... and then nothing.

Red Faction freezes almost instantly.

I've googled and looked for fixes - no luck. I've also tried re-downloading and verifiying the files. My older Steam games all work fine.

No more Steam for me for now. I'll go D2D if anything.

I have lower specs than you, recently installed windows 7 64 and am not having any problems.

I would check for updates for your nic drivers. Maybe try restarting modem/router. Actually, I'd check for all updates for your motherboard in Intel's site.

Wow, I had no idea my motherboard was not supported by Windows 7. That's absurd.

I'm not using a modem, I'm tapped right into the wall (fibre). I'm digging around to see if there are any drivers out there for me.

I can't even get Crysis multiplayer to load, it crashes every time, so there is definitely something else going on. Very odd that LOTRO runs without any problems whatsoever though. :hmm:

Maybe I should start looking for a cheap mobo/CPU upgrade. :\

What is your Internet connection speed option set at under the Steam options? I'm asking because I had similar issues a few years ago, maybe two years or so, and it was all related to that setting which back then I assumed was automatically detecting my speed, but it didn't and it set itself to DSL 256K speed instead of Cable 10MB, when I found out I could have ripped out all of my hair, it was that stupid.

Maybe it's different in your case though, I wouldn't know, I myself am using Vista now, and the issue I had which I described above happened when I was still using XP. The only other thing I can think of at the moment would be that your Ethernet drivers are old or corrupted, I for one do know that bad Ethernet drivers can cause severe connection-related issues and even cause BSODs when playing on-line games.

Before you start ripping apart your PC and budgeting for the change let's explore a few more options.

Since your last post we've had a few more suggestions to look into.

The one I can add is: System Restore. If you leave System Restore on like I do when I rebuild a system it should be recording a new System Restore point everytime you install software or make certain changes. Go back through the System Restore catalogue and see what changes have been made since the approximate time your 'PC issues' started. List the issues and see what could have caused your random issue. Perhaps performing a system restore would be useful but more likely a last resort.

Exploring more on this "My motherboard is not supported by Windows 7" issue would be good too. PC people are resourceful and may know of certain workarounds, fixes and other useful tidbits of advice to sort it all out.

I have to say the issues I have had with Steam since I started using it have been minimal and typically restricted to "Server too busy. Try again later" during sales or when big games are released and certain GFWL issues... which is GFWL's problem.

I would pull Avira and try something like AVG or MS Security Essentials just to see if it makes any difference. Is there anything else that you usually keep open in the background?
