You do fast food crawls too?!

Reading ATOT can be detrimental to one's health. I've had the weirdest cravings from ice cream, green smoothies, burgers, you name it ... all thanks to ATOT threads. Make it stop!

I decide to wait on 5 Guys until the next time I went out and go there in person, I figured I would want the fries hot out of the peanut oil

Just note, for a burger place, it's kinda pricey. The double cheese burger by itself is $6.99. Fries start at like $2.50 or so. So while delicious, it is a bit expensive.

However, all fast food places have become pretty damn expensive as well. $7-8 for combo meals.

Also, if you ever have a chance to go to BurgerFi, they are a clone of 5 Guys, but with better meat (although the Cajun fries aren't as good as 5 Guy's). Fewer locations though:

http://burgerfi.com/locations

One of their key ingredients is their burger sauce, which I successfully cloned the other day. Throw all of this in a blender:

1 cup mayo (regular, not olive-oil flavored & not low-fat)
1/3 cup Heinz ketchup
1 clove (segment) of garlic
1/3 sweet pickle spear (like a Vlasic)
Salt to taste (balances out the sweetness)

It's almost like a Thousand Island dressing or fry sauce, but a bit on the sweeter side. Since I can't do buns (gluten allergy), I do lettuce wraps ("greenstyle") instead, which are pretty boring unless you have the right sauce - and this is the ticket. Also, I make my own mayo using this recipe & an immersion (stick) blender:

http://www.seriouseats.com/2011/10/the-food-lab-homemade-mayo-in-2-minutes-or-le.html

1 cup safflower oil (canola works too, but safflower comes out thicker, with more body)
1 tablespoon lemon juice (I use bottled ReaLemon)
1 tablespoon water (key ingredient!!)
1 teaspoon dijon mustard
Salt (to taste)
1 egg yolk (no egg white)

My immersion blender was $50 & has a truckload of attachments: (this sucker is magic!)

http://www.davelikesfood.com/post/94451354989/mayo-update-immersion-blender

It literally takes 30 to 60 seconds to make a jar of homemade mayo, which you can then flavor however you want - plain mayo, garlic aioli, fry sauce, burger sauce, Thousand Island, chipotle mayo, etc. Super creamy & no preservatives or other junk ingredients. We spent the evening cloning the BurgerFi sauce recipe at my buddy's house the other day & it was a huge hit, even though we did greenstyle burgers for everyone (no buns). Tastes great with chopped raw onions btw. We did it with smash burgers (3-minute skinny burgers):

http://www.thepauperedchef.com/2008/12/the-smash-technique-and-skinny-burger-perfection.html

We found the trick to doing the lettuce wrap is to make a clamshell out of the lettuce - if you just do lettuce leafs, it falls apart & is super messy. Easiest thing to do is cut off the top & bottom of the head of lettuce, then slice one side open so it kind of pulls apart into a big flat sheet - that way you can clamshell it over the burger, slice off the sides so it's kind of square, and it makes a great wrap for holding all of the ingredients in. I'll probably be making this every week as my new default burger, so +1 for reverse engineering! :awe:

I registered on their site and have a bbq burger, extra mayo, pickles, extra cheese, tomatoes and a large order of Cajun fries ready to order and it is 13.71. That seems high unless a large order of fries is enough for two and the burgers are huge

They used to only have one size of fries. Unofficially, it's "family size." You are making a mistake if you order more than one in the typical party.

A riding group I was with went to one right before hitting up Glendora Mountain Road in Glendora, CA. Despite my warnings, they all made the mistake of ordering personal fries and our tables were absolutely covered. Being on motorcycles, few of us had the ability to carry leftovers. Fries were awesome though.

Uh...everything in their facility is fried in peanut oil (hence the boxes of peanuts to grab & snack on), so I don't think having a seedless bun option would matter since sesame seeds are in the nut allergy family...

I had no idea they fry the burgers in oil. That's certainly unique.

Been to burgerfi once, did not like it. Burger was super tiny and cold when I got it. Bleh. Does not compare to 5 guys at all.

I think I will try that, how long will that sauce be good in the fridge?

If you're doing it homemade, I would give it a week (maybe 2 weeks max, although it makes a small batch & disappears quick!). If you're mixing an off-the-shelf mayo like Hellman's, that stuff is shelf-stable all day long, even when not in the fridge, so it'd probably last forever haha.

The sauce is REALLY good & works well on both greenstyle & buns. We demolished 3 pounds of 80/20 the other day because the sauce was so good, om nom nom

Does BurgerFi use peanut oil?

5 Guys fries better when fresh instead of after arriving at home with takeout.

Sounds like a bad experience. I have several in my area & stop at them pretty much weekly since they are very allergy-friendly. I can't eat the bun, so I always do the lettuce wrap, and the BurgerFi meat is far better than 5 Guy's patty, which is bland by itself - even condiments don't help 5 Guy's greenstyle burger taste better. I've been to 3 or 4 different 5 Guys in my travels & they are all the same for the lettuce wrap - bleh. Cajun fries are amazing tho! I would give BurgerFi another shot, if you're up for it - I like them over 5 Guy's quite a bit. Although one bad experience can ruin a restaurant for you, so that's understandable too.

Yes. They are exactly the same as 5 Guys, except (1) their burgers are better due to the quality of the meat, and (2) their fries are kind of soggy (soft) rather than crispy (not necessarily in a bad way, but I like 5 Guy's fries better). They also give you ridiculously huge quantities of fries (I order the Cajun fries with light seasoning, otherwise you can't stop eating because it starts burning your mouth, haha).

I agree, they are best fresh in-store. I think they kind of steam in the bag on the way home, especially since I live about 30 minutes from the mall, so rip open the bag so that the steam can escape & not continue cooking the fries while you're driving home. #firstworldproblems

Oh man my stomach is growling after seeing this.

I think it would be cool to own a niche food truck, like all of those gourmet roach mobiles popping up in the west, only have it be "man food" - like scotch eggs on a stick (manly cake pop)

I like 5 guys quite a bit.

The burger is mediocre IMO. It is good, but I've had better burgers in Shoneys and other places. It is often soggy and the meat is a little stingy.

The fries are the real reason to go there. Amazingly good fries.
