my friend wants to buy the ultraflex, but the site looks a bit shady. does anyone have experience with this product or have a good alternative?

It's a gimick. Depending on what your goals are, equipment varies greatly... so that leads me to ask - what are your goals?

Total gimmick. Did you ever notice that they don't put fat or out of shape people in their advertisements? Do you honestly believe that the people in those commercials got in shape using ONLY the gimmick-y "exercise equipment" they're trying to sell you??

At best, the only thing that piece of equipment is good for is making you feel like you're working your muscles if you're stuck at a desk. You could get the same workout using isometrics and doing sit-ups/push-ups in the office. 🙄

in addition to marvdmartian's sit-ups/push-ups suggestion, i would say your friend could buy a pull-up bar. and there are plenty of body-weight only exercises (air squats, lunges, jump-tucks, hand-stand pushups, burpees, ...) that require no equipment. your friend could also buy a jump-rope with the left-over money.

I don't know what the general consensus about these is on here so I'm a bit hesitant to post this, but I really like Bodylastics resistance bands. There is so much you can do with them.

I've also got:
Iron Gym extreme pull up bar +ab straps
Perfect pushup
A few kettlebells (need to start selling the smaller weight ones soon heh 🙂)
Adjustable dumbbells. basically similar to two of these kits but with heavier plates (up to 60lbs on each one)... one was free and one was $15 (craigslist)
FID bench
