AT H&F runners, I need your help

Hey guys/gals, I found a race being held on July 4th that I'm pretty excited about. It's the Finger Lakes Fifties, it takes place very close to my home. The race has 3 distances you can run: 25k, 50k, or 50M. 50M is completely out of the question for me right now so that option is out.

BUT I am intrigued by the idea of signing up for the 50k. I'm good for about 17 miles right now, is there any plausible way I can be ready to do a full 50k with a month to train? By month I mean 3 weeks with 1 week to taper of course...

Thanks for helping me decide this one, I can't trust my own judgement - I'm biased. 😱

With a 4 week training time, you'd probably only be able to get 1 good long run, probably around 26 to 28 miles in before the race and still have enough recovery time.

I'd say if you can already do 17, you could probably do the 50K, but you're going to have to take it slow and take some breaks.

Also, have you used anything like Shot Bloks, Gas Caps, protein bars, gels, etc, on previous training runs to know what works for you? Race day isn't the time to test a new stim.

I tried GU Roctane at the last race I was in, but I don't think I needed it for 15 miles. I'm sure I'm going to need it for 50k though, which would be the easiest to get used to? Are there some forms that seem easier on the stomach than others?

Hey,

I'd say the 50k is stretching it a bit. For marathons, for example (about 8km shorter), you need to do at least a 20 mile run a few weeks in advance. It's ideal to get in 2-3 20 mile runs over a span of a couple months in advance.

So for a 50k race, I would assume you'd want to do at least a 20 miler, if not 22 or 23 miles. In this case, you'd want to do it either this week or next, in order to leave enough time to taper. Even if you slow the pace, 20 miles takes it out of you as you will break through the "wall" and need time to recover. That might be a bit too much for you this time around.

🙁 Sorry man, but if 17 miles is the most you've ever run, I think you'll have trouble finishing at this point. I would try to build your mileage and try for the 50k a few months from now. Do the 25k this time.

Good luck!

If you're looking to just finish it, you may be able to but expect to do some walking. Typically, you'd want to train upwards of 25 miles and putting 50+ miles per week. Then giving yourself a 2-3 week taper. With only a month out and being good up to 17 miles right now, you'd be training/extending your runs up to the week prior.

After you finish a 17mi run, how messed up are you? How do you feel the next day?

4 weeks is still cutting it close, but if you're fine after a 17mi run, you could probably attempt the 50K. Just don't hold any thoughts of super fast times, etc.

I'm all for pushing one's limits, but you gotta prepare properly.

I would advise against it. If your life depends on it, yes you can run it. You're going from a long run of 17 miles to a 31 mile race, though.

I've run one marathon of 26 miles. The distance comparison you're talking about would have me, one month out from a marathon, at under 15 miles for a long run whereas most training programs would want me at 20 now. When I did the marathon I had completed two 20 mile runs. I was tired after, but the surprised to me was that the extra 6 for the marathon took an extra special toll. That was the first time running my feet actually hurt, plus the sense of fatigue was really substantial.

Probably at this point like inflatable buddah said you'd want to be in the low 20's.

I'd train for an ultra longer in the year and do this 25k as a fun one for now.
Ok, I see that July 4 might be too soon. But what about Oct. 10, 2009?
There you go!

Agreed with everything he just said.

Thanks for the input guys. My plan is for my son and I to run 25k at the Fingerlakes 50s and 50k at the Can Lake 50. We're pretty stoked to be doing the 50k, my son really wants the title ultramarathoner. Kids... 😛

Awesome...sounds like a good plan. Good luck with your training!

I agree with the above posters. Most marathon plans have you running 4 long (20+ miles) runs before your 26.2 mile run. You'd be lucky to get 1 25 miler in, which is ~1/4 of what you'd need to prep yourself adequately. In my opinion, if you're training for a race, you should train well for it so you can perform well and not be disappointed. Or have the ability to make (albeit very good) excuses.

LoL, I make awesome excuses, but I don't want to for this. I'm going to wait until October to do an ultra, I should have plenty of time to train properly for that.

My first ultra will be a 50K in November 2009. Looking to do my first 100mi in October 2010 too.
