AT Doctors I need your help!

Short story... Grandmother cannot walk on her own, cannot do anything on her own including standing up.

Today, she was being assisted by her younger sister (sister 85, grandmother 87) in the bathroom when she somehow feel, hit her face and as a result, she is in the hospital need surgery on her cornea.

I have been doing some quick research as to what this means, but can anyone tell me what the severity of this is? This just happened and they have scheduled the surgery for later today.

Will doctors be able to repair the cornea? Will she see worse than she does now (already has cateracs (sp?) in both eyes.

Any help would be appericated as this could not have come at a worse time for her or my family.

This isn't much to go on, but I'm pretty sure I've heard of doctors repairing corneas.

The cornea is the transparent covering of the eye on the front - it covers the iris and pupil (where light goes in). Beneath the cornea and behind the iris is the lens (which is where cataracts develop). Light needs to travel through both in order to have vision, as they are both important in focusing light on the retina.

In general, the cornea can be operated on. It is reshaped in laser vision correction and generally heals quite well when scratched.

Corneas are also frequently transplanted when they are non functional.



I don't know about your grandmother's particular injury, so it is real hard to give you an answer. However, if I were to pick a part of my eye to injure - I'd go for cornea.

The cornea is the most fixed/replaced part of the body.
Your grandmother has nothing to worry about.
She wont see any better because cataracts has to do with the lens.

Also I had to cut an eye open and it was a tough as a tennis ball.
This is probably why she only injured the cornea.
