What's considered upscale? I had a five-dollar cheeseburger . . .

What with the cost of soft drinks, being charged full price for a refill is ridiculous - soda is almost entirely pure profit, one or two refills isn't cutting into their margins too much. If I'd asked for 9-10 refills I could see being charged again, but one?

Well I can't comment on the restaurant you went to, but some of the fancier ones will serve you a bottle of whatever soda you ordered. For instance a root beer. Then, when you are done with that they will charge you for another one. Giving you a bottle instead of a glass, or a bottle with a glass is kind of their sneaky way of not giving free refills. Also, it gives the customer the impression that the soda is "higher quality."

Sure, I've been to places where I've gotten the bottle . . . or even the can. Being charged for a refill in that situation is understandable. This was out of the fountain, though.

i once tipped a waitress for each glass she bought me.
the first time i went in, sucks to be her, she didn't give me any refills, even when i asked. ZERO tip.

at a different establishment, i actually managed 9 refills (we were there for quite awhile). I ended up leaving her 25% or so, she was nice (and quite attractive and flirty, wooowoooooo)

Being a poor college student, I always have to tip the minimum (nice tips here and there really add up and it hurts the wallet, sorry to all you hard-working servers out there). So when I don't get my refills, all the better excuse to give a smaller tip ~ 10%. Sometimes I round the dollar down when normally I would have rounded up.

wait for the current/past waiters/waitresses to hijack it and tell us how we're all cheapasses.

Nope, I'm waiting for the people who thinks servers do not deserve the 15-20% tips.
Those who thinks serving is a non-skilled position and should not get the $15+ per hour. Those who thinks restaurants should pay their servers more...those who thinks they work hard for their money and should not tip 15% just because someone is bringing them food.......those who don't understand why only in America do we have a tipping system......those who......yeah I'm waiting for one of those people to chime in.

i can see you have rebuttals for every kind of situation😉

I usually don't tip anyway. No refils at a restaurant where you're supposed to get refils just reinforces my stance on the whole bullsh|t of tipping.

As long as I'm in control of my money and not some stupid assnut who thinks he has some right to my money other than his paycheck, then I'll be whatever you want to call me.

I was half serious. If you don't like how much you make, get a different job. It's that simple. I don't give a flying four letter word for copulation if the guy who serves me is a nobel fvcking peace prize winner in science for finding a cure for cancer or some guy who's using his aunt's mailing address on his application to get a job and living in a box down by the river. You don't deserve anything more than your paycheck.

I tip based on performance. If I have to wait for drinks, the tip will be less; if the service is fast and friendly, I'll tip more. I've waited tables, was bad at it, but I know how hard it can be to work that job for $2.50/hr plus tips.

In Amsterdam, tips are different. 5-10% max on a meal, 10% for a taxi is considered normal. The customer service there is a whole different world, though- most Americans would consider 5% too generous for the lousy service you get! (Dutch customer service, or lack thereof, is sort of a standing joke among expats)

I usually tip zero to start. If the waitress asks me if I want a refill when she is coming to the table for something else(bringing food clearing plates etc) then my likelihood to tip increases. If she stops and asks for no reason but to see if I want a refill the likliehood increase more. If she brings refills without asking because she saw my glass empty then she will be getting a tip for sure.

Add that together with other service factors(speed, proper order taking, friendliness, attentiveness) and bonus factors(honest recommendations, special requests, etc) and that's how I figure out the tip.

But if a waitress just does the bare minimum:

After a couple minutes comes and takes drink order
5 more minutes takes food order and drops drinks
Brings food
Clears plates and brings check

That to me is the bare minimum she has to do and is not tipworthy.

Ditto! It's pretty easy to keep me happy, but I'm surprised at how many waitresses suck. I gladly leave no tip for them.

So a poor intelligent dude should wait tables? What's the difference? Bagging groceries requires no skill. Just like waiting on tables.

That would be me. I do not think that servers deserve more than $15/hr. If they do, then they do. Definitely not a requirement. If they feel they're not getting paid enough, then why not make the managers pay them more?

Tips have little to do with the way you are treated by the staff in general BTW, it has a LOT more to do with your attitude and howyou treat them.. If you're pleasant they will be and vice versa.

Pleasantness rarely has anything to do with the factors that make me tip more or less.

If you're a d!ck from the get go, they'll go to little effort to serve you well.. That's the point. Servers are people too... many of them are none to intelligent people who make a life decisions based on how they feel at the moment. This isn't meant to be smug or condescending, simply an observation based on having worked in the industry.

Um, that's bs in my opinion. I'm pretty open and friendly with the waiters/waitresses considering I used to be one - it makes no difference in terms of service that I've seen. My other post above mentioned me tipping a quarter - we were as nice as one could possibly be and she just didn't give a sh!t. Another time at TGIF, our waitress was the same way. Hell, a totally different waiter brought us out our drinks, refills, and food. I felt inclined to tip that guy and not her, but he disappeared when the bill came around. When I was a waiter, if anything I made an effort to be fast and friendly. People could have been super nice and still left less than a 10% tip.

They don't "deserve" anything. They like anybody have the ability to "earn" tips.

Those who thinks serving is a non-skilled position and should not get the $15+ per hour.

It is a non-skilled position unworthy of $15/hr. It is a minimum wage position(yeah I know they don't get minw age).

Those who thinks restaurants should pay their servers more

They should. But restaurants don't because the law lets them. If the servers in this country don't like it then change it. We live in a democracy don't we.

Those who thinks they work hard for their money and should not tip 15% just because someone is bringing them food

Why should I tip someone. I have paid a premium for my restaurant cooked meal. That premium includes the costs of the food and establishment(which includes paying cooks, wait staff, bus boys, managers etc)

Really if you don't like the wages at your job then move on. If you want a structred wage then find something that pays a salary or flat hourly rate. Can't find a good job. Go to college. Can't afford college. Get student loans like other poor people do to pay for their education.

I think this is complete BS. Tipping has made the world come to the point where you have to kiss ass to the business to get excellent service. If that is the case, servers should all just get minimum wage. That way people will expect and be ok with bad service.

I just tip less than usual. I have yet to not Tip since being an adult.

I figure everybody has a bad day now and then, if they get two bad days well I'm not going to chance a third for a long time. And after a long time, they get that chance and mess it up, well, no more for me please.

The only place I can think of that is basically on my do-not-go-there list is Denny's. And that holds for 99% of them. There's one not too far from our house that is OK and I'll go that one once in a blue moon. Otherwise they are pretty much off the list.

Othereplaces that I've had bad service once, have been better on return trips. Can't fault the restaurant for a bad server and vice versa, but, I don't have to keep going there either. But, I've been in a family of people who've been in the service business at some point so I've been educated on how to be a good customer... doesn't that suck.

Always reward the waiter/waitress according to the quality of service they have provided. This way evryone gets/gives accordingly.

Marc
