As long as they stop by the table every so often so I can get a refill that's fine. If they bring the food and don't show up again until it's time to leave, then they get a very small tip. I go through usually 3 or 4 sodas during a sit down meal so I might be more picky than others.

Sometimes I've had to ask some other passing waiter for a refill if mine wasn't around. But yes, this always leads to a smaller tip.

But you shouldn't give NO tip unless they did absolutely everything wrong. Otherwise you're just a jackass.

A waiter/waitress should feel obligated to keep an eye on your table, and refill your drink for you whenever that is necessary. A waiter/waitress is not doing you any favors by refilling your drink, they are simply doing their JOB. If the waiter/waitress cannot perform their job well, then naturally their tip is going to be reduced. Provoking an already poor college student by not refilling his drink for him whenever he is thirsty = crappy tip.

That sums up most of my points. :)

I don't even go that far and I'm a definite anti-tipping person.

You are incredibly wrong. I think you mean not everyone has parent's that will pay for their college.

If you are willing to take out student loans anyone can go.

I have a dry mouth policy which I use to determine the tip. The longer my mouth stays dry because of no water/soda, the lower the tip.

refill is the whole point of waiting. If their job is just to take order and bring food, they only deserve 5-10% tip. Refill brings the tip to 15-20%.

I love these tipping threads. I'm sure everyone who reads most of them knows my philosophy. To sum it up: at a normal sit-down restaurant ($5-$10 average per meal) I tip $1 per person at the table. The more people the waiter/waitress serves, the more work he/she does, the greater the tip. Then comes the bonus round. You gain $1 for being a great server and lose $1 for being a horrible server (Note the bonus addition and subtraction would be larger if I ever paid for a large table of people, but that hasn't happened yet in my life).

Math example: me and wife order $5 meals and service was excellent. $1*2 base tip + $1 bonus = $3 tip on a $10 bill. Lousy service on the same order? $1*2 base tip - $1 bonus = $1 tip on the bill.

I do not count bad food in consideration of the tip. Bad food is the highly paid chef's fault - not the waitress/waiter's fault. I do include speed of service, drink refills, politeness, accuracy of order (unless obvious it was the chef's fault), etc.

Tipping used to be voluntary for good service. Then the mannor police came out and said 10%. Then servers complain and they change it to 15%, and now they complain more and demand 20%. When will it stop? They probably won't be satisfied until there is a mandatory $1000 tip on a $10 meal. Damn, we need to return to where a tip is a bonus for good service.

There was only one time when I didn't tip the waitress. It was at Pizza Hut (blech...), and the manager seated up. We waited 20 minutes, the waitress got off the payphone, and came and took our order. After that, the cook brought out or Pizza and the manager filled our drinks. I paid the bill, and tipped the manager and the cook, but left nothing for the waitress.

TGiF, almost empty.

Waited 30 minutes for food. Food is cold (ie. french fries are cold). No refills.

I left a tip of $0.02 on a credit card slip. I wanted to make it clear that I hadn't forgotten the tip.

In NYC, they don't have refills, EVER. Can you believe that? First time they asked for a refill, I was shocked that they charged me. Only place I have seen it is in fast food places.

That's why you always ask if the restaurant charges for refils. :)

I usually have a system. Start off at 18%. For every good service (server refills without me asking, or comes by more than once to ask how things are going) I add 2%. For everytime I have to ask for a refill, its -2%. If you never see your server period (dont even get a chance to ask) its minus 8%.

Once, I didnt like the rice i was served (after i ate half of it) and I asked the server, and he promptly asked if i wanted a new side dish. I got buttered Asparagus for free no questions asked (one of the more expensive sides for some reason). This warranted a +8% tip from me. Then again, that place was real nice and I ended tipping 40% on a 60$ meal.

Cliff notes: No refill = less tip.

Also, an unasked refill when refills are not free = much less tip. I hate that.

I've eaten in many restaurants in NYC and I never noticed that. I'll have to look at the bill closely next time.

As a (recently former) server, a reduced tip is fair.

Be reasonable, sometimes the restauraunt is understaffed, or seating timing gets messed up, not the servers' fault. But good servers know when they mess up on a table, and accept the lower tip graciously. Bad servers don't make as much money, so they don't stay in the business long. This is good for everybody.

To the person who didn't tip because they were charged for a refill, it is not the server who sets pricing policy for the restaurant. Make a comment to the manager, or suck it up. Don't take it out on someone who has no control over the situation.

To those who refuse to tip. Remember that servers take jobs based on their average expected income. They usually get paid squat in wages, which means that the restaurant can afford to hire enough to give good service. If the wages were higher, you would have fewer servers, and higher food prices. At least with tipping, you can pay what you feel they deserve. If you want to be cheap, go ahead. Just please remember that tips are the greater part of a server's income, and if you are paying for a large group, you could be personally responsible for food in their kid's mouths the next day. Today's servers didn't start the custom of tipping. The business has evolved around it.

They don't "deserve" anything. They like anybody have the ability to "earn" tips.

Those who thinks serving is a non-skilled position and should not get the $15+ per hour.

It is a non-skilled position unworthy of $15/hr. It is a minimum wage position(yeah I know they don't get minw age).

Those who thinks restaurants should pay their servers more

They should. But restaurants don't because the law lets them. If the servers in this country don't like it then change it. We live in a democracy don't we.

Those who thinks they work hard for their money and should not tip 15% just because someone is bringing them food

Why should I tip someone. I have paid a premium for my restaurant cooked meal. That premium includes the costs of the food and establishment(which includes paying cooks, wait staff, bus boys, managers etc)

Really if you don't like the wages at your job then move on. If you want a structred wage then find something that pays a salary or flat hourly rate. Can't find a good job. Go to college. Can't afford college. Get student loans like other poor people do to pay for their education.

Thanks for posting what I would have posted :D

And regarding tipping if they take forever to refill your botomless drink, i'll either pay up to the nearest dollar so they get to "keep the chage" or not leave a tip at all.

I hate it when I see someone walk right by my table, LOOK at my empty glass and return 5 minutes later when it's convenient for them and ask "oh, do you need a refill?"

One of the reasons I return to claim jumper is that on top of their good food, the service there is generally awesome.

I know that tips are the majority of a waiters income. I think a fair pay for them is $6-10/hr. That is why I tip around !0%. I even feel that I am being generous with that.
