I thought I was going crazy today. Built a new PC for a buddy and I've spent 6 hours trying to figure out what was wrong and I think it's this. This was first 3TB boot drive install, so I had to mess with the UEFI BIOS and stuff and getting my USB drive formatted properly for Windows install. It's not hardware, it's some sort of bad driver issue. I'm going to take it back tomorrow and get my buddy a 750ti and be done with it.
Specs, Asus 260x DC2OC, 8320, Gigabyte 970a-D3p motherboard, Corsair TX power supply, 3TB Seagate Drive. Decent system all around.
Things that tell me it's the drivers.
Upon first install of Windows 7 and 8.1, with only Windows drivers installed, all is good. Safe mode is good. Windows installation is good.
Once you install the AMD drivers, tried Beta, latest and the ones from Asus, and restart, it will start to boot up, get the windows loading, then the screen will go black, there is still power to the screen (as in the backlight of my TV still shows light) then it goes totally black, as in no signal at all.
Shutting off the PC and turning back on, and it's fines. It's only when doing a restart from Windows that does it. It has to be related to the drivers or else it would screw up upon first boot up. It's a bug in all their drivers though and carries across Win 7 or 8.1. Very frustrating, for me, doing a fav for a buddy turns into my whole day wasted and him, who can't use his new PC tonight and has to wait till tomorrow.
I also tried my 7870 in the PC, works fine and it needs two 6pin PCIe power instead of the one, so I know the PSU is good, and it's a TX, one of Corsairs better models.
It's very reproducable though. Install any driver version, restart the PC from windows. Bootup logo->black screen->no power to the screen. Any AMD drivers and 2 versions of windows and I would imagine 8 would be the same.
Lame.
