Asus P8P67 and Core i7 2600, overclocking/performance possibilities?

I currently have an old Asus P5KC and a Core 2 Duo e6850 and I'm thinking of going with the i7 2600. There's been good deals on the Asus P8P67 and most of the reviews I've read make it sound like a decent board.

I was just curious, does anyone have any experience with this board/combination with the CPU that can vouch for it's overclocking potential/performance?

I'm still going to be using my Patriot Sector 5 1333MHz RAM for the meantime so I don't expect a huge increase in terms of memory.

Does this motherboard/CPU sound like a good combination? Any feedback would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

You won't be able to overclock the i7 2600 much at all. About all you can do is force the turbo multiplier to get 3.8GHz and maybe play with the fsb a little.

If you wanna overclock you'll need the 2600K or even the 2500K instead.

If your in Dallas then you need to jump on one of the microcenter deals. Get the 2600K or 2500K

Maybe get a motherboard witha z68 chipset instead. Something like the following board looks pretty nice. Save $40 off motherboard if you purchase it with the 2500 or 2600K

Yeah, Microcenter is exactly where I was going to go as a matter of fact. I noticed they have the 2600k for $279 which is only $30 more than the regular 2600, so I think I'll go with that.

I'm on a really tight budget and the processor itself is going to hurt me pretty bad, so I was looking at the less expensive motherboards and noticed that the Asus P8P67 didn't seem to be too bad for $110. I just can't really find too many reviews on it. I was hoping someone could shed some light on the motherboard's performance itself and overclocking ability if it has the right processor.

I'm coming from a Core 2 Duo e6800 so a lot of this stuff is new to me. I'm just trying to get a fairly top of the line CPU with a decent motherboard that's not just a hunk of junk.

Looking at the microcenter store viewing the dallas location I don't see this board. Is this price after the $40 motherboard discount?

It's an open-box special or something like that, don't really have a problem with it as long as it works. I just hope they still have some tomorrow.

If it was me I wouldn't even go for a open box motherboard. The $40 combo discount doesn't work with open box items it looks like. I just tried it twice.

Look at the board I linked above. Add that one and the 2600K to your cart. You'll see that motherboard will be cheaper than your open box one. It'll be a better board also. Has a small rebate too. If you don't like the motherboard I linked just look for another new one you do like.

You can add your motherboard and cpu to cart for instore pickup. You just do the checkout and give your name, address, credit or debit card number and they pull items and save for you. Your card wont be charged untill you pickup your items. You can pay cash or any other way when you pick them up.

The Gigabyte motherboard you linked me to looks awesome and from what I had just read it sounds like an excellent board. I'm just worried about the final price since I won't be using a normal credit card.

What's the deal with the Microcenter card or whatever it is? That's what I was planning on signing up and getting tomorrow in order to get the items with payments. If I add the items to the cart without having the Microcenter card first, I won't be able to do that will I? I'd still have to go to the store, sign up for the card, come back home and then add the products to the cart.

I was really just hoping to go to Microcenter, get the Microcenter card, pick up the CPU, a decent motherboard that can overclock well, and a heatsink/fan. Either way I'm going to have to go to the store, so there wouldn't be any way to get that same rebate?

The gigabyte board would be the same price as the open box one you linked as you'd get the $40 combo discount with it making it 109.99 for the motherboard.

You can use a debit or credit card to hold the items for instore pickup. They will not charge the card unless you pay with that card when you pick up your items. If your going down their tomorrow anyways then apply for the card. If you get the card just take the info and your email confirmation you'd get in the AM if you do the instore pickup order to the online order pickup window and pay for it with the microcenter card. If by some chance you don't get the card you just leave. Microcenter will hold the items for 3 days then put them back in stock. They will not charge your card anything at all.

Asus p8p67 deluxe + 2600k, 4.8ghz@1.32 CPU voltage stable. OC was way too easy as I mis-clicked a button and it goes all the way up to 5.2+Ghz until it overheated (had coretemp config to auto shutdown when overheat.)

Thanks Seerio, that was the exact information I was looking for in terms of overclocking with that specific board.

Kenmitch, the Gigabyte board is $149 with a $15 rebate, making it $135 on the webpage. If I add that to my shopping cart and try to check out, it tells me the grand total is $162 after tax. I think I maybe missing something? I never saw a mention of a $30 rebate anywhere, just the $15 rebate.

Your buying CPU also aren't you? Add both to cart and it'll charge 109.99 for the board. Only works with 2500k and 2600k's.
