I was given a P4 1.7 processor and I want to buy a board that will allow me to upgrade the processor to a P4 2.8 or 3.2 in 6 or 8 months.

Money is very tight right now and that is why I am using the old 1.7, but it is better than a PIII processor.

I like intel products, and I like the 865PE chipset, which is why I picked this board. The only other motherboards that I know of that support "Wilamette" and "Northwood" processors is Gigabyte.

Using 512 of Crucial 3200 memory and the board listed above, I can keep my cost under
$180.00 if I use parts form my other PC's.

Please let me know your experiences with the P4P800 SE motherboard.

Thanks for your help

I built my wife a system around this board. Very solid. She has a 3.2 GHz Intel in it with Corsair TwinX (2x512) DDR. Turning on the Turbo mode in the BIOS resulted in 2-2-2-6 memory timings!

Is the 1.7 CPU not a Willamette Socket 423?

If so, it won't work on the P4P800SE.

I have one in a box beside me right now, going in the next system build, and it's a Socket 478.. will accept northwood/prescott and all celerons, not Willamette.

Craig RT, the " Willamette" processors were made in both the Socket 423 and the 478 socket, so I lucked out. The P4P800Se is 478 and it will take all of the socket 478 P4's.

MalfurionStormrage, nice to hear that your system is working fine.

My son and I try to only purchase Abit and Asus motherboards since we have always had good luck with their products. Abit's motherboards will not support the full range of the P4's so that is why Asus is my main choice.

Thanks to both of you for your help

Great, as long as the CPU is Socket 478 it should work! I did not know that CPU even came in 478 form, but being as the mobo is an 865 chipset, support for the Willamette should indeed work (as it might not on newer boards like 875 chipset and up)

I have had good luck with these boards, so you should like it.

cheers!
