I would have bit in a heartbeat on this. I would probably even buy one for $250 w/ free shipping, but price is now $250 plus shipping.

It will go on sale again soon

Digitimes has an article on how Asus is sitting on a huge amount of inventory.

Edit:

Asustek to reduce 25-30% of inventory in 1Q09, says paper

Apple Daily, February 2; Joseph Tsai, DIGITIMES [Monday 2 February 2009]

Asustek Computer plans to reduce its current stockpiled inventory, worth around NT$40-45 billion (US$1.18-1.33 billion), to NT$30-35 billion before the end of the first quarter this year, according to a Chinese-language Apply Daily report.

Asustek's LCD monitor inventory at the end of last year was worth around NT$6 billion. The company estimated this would cause losses of around 20%, equivalent to NT$1.2 billion, for the fourth quarter last year due to depreciation, the paper noted.

The company also plans to reduce its motherboard and graphics card inventory levels to 8-10 weeks in the first quarter this year, while the level for completed PC systems will be even lower. The company will reduce its operating costs by 10%, and will execute new strategies to face exchange rate fluctuations and flexible quotes, the paper added.

I hope its soon as I would like to buy a monitor today, lol
I thought about buying the 22" for $200, but this one for $230-250 would be a little nicer deal. If they dropped the price on the 25.5" that would be great too; although not bad for $330 after rebate

Thanks for the info

I'm a professional photographer that uses a 24" TN LCD daily. If you buy a quality panel and calibrate it, you'll be fine.

That might be key, for people who are, ahem, more discerning when it comes to displays.

* Poor vertical viewing angle (especially from below)
* Poor screen uniformity and stability (white can look "dirty"), which can reduce perceived contrast
* Lateral viewing angle is not great (darker/lighter details can appear and disappear depending on the angle)
* Lack of true 8-bit DAC causes color tinting, fringing, and burning in gradients and poor reproduction of darker tones
* Very unlikely to get image persistence
* more prone to backlight bleeding and QC (quality control) problems than other panel types.

Besides the viewing angle, which is not a problem if you angle the screen properly and don't have your nose buried in it, all the other problems are not necessarily inherent because of the technology used to manufacture the panel, but sounds more like problems inherent in making something cheap.

I'd be interested in seeing what people think of the new Dell Precision 2409FPW monitors because those are TN panels yet a "high end" monitor.

has anyone found an .inf file for this monitor? Or am I overlooking it on the included disc? Don't see one on the Asus site either

Yupp,
looks like a TN panel also, I'd steer clear.

Also, to the OP, please chime in on your thoughts after you get the monitor, and what you upgraded from.

OK.
I'm currently using a Samsung 191T (19") that I bought from New Egg about 5 years ago for $600!!!
When you think about the time I spent using it - it was still a great deal 🙂

holy hell, me too!

um, did your DVI port go out almost 2 years in like mine did, though? 🙁

I've had mine for over 2 weeks now - and I'm loving every second of it. Still no dead pixels, and it runs GTA4, and Far Cry 1 great!!!

The UPS guy just dropped off 4 of these yesterday. The default setting schemes are not that great, but they look drop dead gorgeous after a little tweaking (ended up using the Theatre profile, 88-70-31-33 image settings, and 100-95-80 color tone settings).
