Asteroids@home - new to me! Whose crunching it?

Hi Mark,
I am crunching with a Quad Q8300 and a i7-3770K and both comps are crun ching two other projcets too - so the RAC varies a lot ...

I've not been able upload any WUs since about last night, any1 else having problems?
Home page shows all servers are green.

Btw turned out my CPU didn't have much headroom afterall 🙁, would of taken excessive (over Intel's max) voltages to get it stable at 'just' 3.7 GHz. Settled for 3.6 GHz atm.

I just uploaded a lot of WU's. I have noticed slow response times when doing manual updates trying to upload and get new WU's.

Hmm, ok thx.
I posted to the server thread in the A@H forum, see if anything's posted there.

Just found the problem I think!, whilst my d/l speed is at it's normal 60Mbps+ 🙂, the upload speed is only at 0.1 Mbps!! wth!!?? Should be about 6 IIRC. Gonna see if a reboot fixes it....

[update] Yes it did! 😕

i've got a ton of completed tasks stuck in the "upload" state...so i went to the A@H website and immediately got an error message:
Server upgrade

I am very sorry that project is unavailable. I completely forgot to announce it. There is a server upgrade being performed. Unfortunatelly it will take about 2 days because of disk array reconstruction. Server should be on-line on tuesday 2th or wednesday 3th of December.

Yea I just spotted that too, what made me literally lol was this
I completely forgot to announce it.

Sort of thing I'd do! 😉

In theory I have a 4 day cache but I was recently running LHC so I don't know if that has reduced the number of WUs for A@H? Or it may have caught up.

As of this moment, I still have enough work units cached to cover the next 4.5 days, which is probably a good thing based on prior experience with this project and the admin. 😉

Just noticed I've got a bunch of WUs estimated at 2hrs 6mins whereas previous WUs were 1hr 4mins, looks like they've nearly doubled the WU length again!

Anyone else got these new extra long WUs?

yes i've got some...none of them have validated yet, but i've completed 6 or 7 of them. while the new estimated crunch times aren't representative of what my CPU is capable of, they are double the old estimated crunch times...and my actual crunch times have doubled as well.

i'm sure my estimated and actual crunch times will converge again...i suspect that it got thrown off by the fact that i didn't cache enough A@H tasks to last the entire maintenance outage and had no A@H tasks to crunch for 48 hours or so...

I'm guessing most people have seen the notice that some Nvidia GPUs can now crunch A@H 😎.

Anyone doing it yet? My Nvidia GPU is too old 😛

Anyone doing it yet?
I was all excited to try it, how often does a new GPU app come along, and then I saw they are the same WUs and the same points. The points are super great for CPU, but the WU would finish in only half the time on my GPU? Which would make it the worst GPU ppd on the planet if my numbers are correct. Someone please correct me if I am wrong!

Err yea but surely getting twice as many points is still a major boost?

I know what you're saying, in some projects the speed up is far greater than x2 on GPUs, I see F@H GPU speeds can be 10x faster & more!

Depends if you care generally about total ppd or purely ppd for A@H I suppose.

What GPU have you got?

Err yea but surely getting twice as many points is still a major boost?
Umm ... no ... that is per core, so the CPU would get twice as many points as the GPU. Not worth it when the CPU is already getting such good ppd.

And the GTX560 Ti is doing OK on Albert@Home and the 6870 is getting ~300K ppd in Collatz and the 7950 on MW@H (it was getting 90K ppd in F@H).

Oh yea core count, lol kinda forgot that! :$. I take it you've got a quad core then?
So yea that would be a rather meagre addition to A@H.

What's your 7950 giving you in MW? I'm getting 36k (& still climbing I think) with my old 4870!

Btw I've just discovered there's nothing about asteroids@home on wiki!
I'm just about to try to add that to the DC list at least.

Wow! 😱, I want 1 lol.

Well as an interim measure I bought a HD 5850 off ebay earlier, in theory that should be ~75% faster than my 4870. And it'll use less power 🙂.
