Congrats! My Niece (Daughter in my heart, as i raised her) is a Quadriplegic gamer! She has CP and I over the years I have given her a PSone, SNES, NES, Gamcube, Gameboy, Gameboy Advanced, DS and a Wii and she has been playing games since she was 10 (shes 28 now) and I believe by playing games all these years she has some decent funtionality in her left hand. Its very good therapy for her muscle. I have been bitching to game companies for years to make games playable for the handi-capable and to make an effort in catering to the needs of these people. I have signed your petition.

MORE FAR REACHING SOLUTION:

Instead of (or in addition to) dealing with Microsoft and Sony licensee requirements on the game developers, try a different solution...

What you REALLY need is a fully customizable console game controller. Think in the term of a Logitech Harmony remote for your TV/DVD/DVR/etc but in the form factor of a console game controller. One model would be almost indistinguishable from the current 3rd party wireless controllers (maybe even totally replacing the current product over the next decade). Several models later, maybe one even looking like an arcade/console hybrid with larger buttons and longer pad sticks in a funky small-keyboard-sized flat controller - think generic programmable version of a Street Fighter FightStick but with buttons on both sides of pads/stick(s) and additional pads/sticks.

Ideally several different models as that market evolves (to serve the gamers with different types of special needs), but the initial product could be the same size & structure as the current products, but just with a mini-USB port for programming via PC/Mac and a new custom ASIC to remap buttons into corresponding signals. If designed with forethought, the same ASIC could be used for all their programmable console controllers products (ie maximum of developing one new ASIC per console type for entire product line).

Start by contacting licensed controller manufacturers' PR department. I am sure there are legal issues between Microsoft/Sony and the 3rd party supplies, but MS/Sny has been screwing them for years with licensing fees so they should already be accustomed to legal issues. Very limited market at first, until the non-handicapped players also figure out the versatility of a such a controller, then they could watch their sales figures soar. Kind of comparable to high end keyboards and mice/trackballs but just another market to penetrate.

Just a thought.

(Probably not the first to recommend this to the likes of Logitech, but I hereby claim all royalties. Whoever racks up their first $1B in sales with this product line owes me a cookie. Maybe an ice cream, too.)

bullbert I agree that would be a good solution. But reMapping would help many who don't need a control solution.
