petition signed. rock on, dude.

button remapping should be in every game, leaving it out is just laziness on the dev's part.

Thanks guys here is what one guy I know in the industry had to say

Quote
"It's actually not TOO hard to program (console guys make it pretty easy, too). The biggest reason I know of why developers don't allow full customization is that it presents huge challenges for our testing departments. More or less by Sony decree (with similar decrees by Microsoft and Nintendo, I'm sure), all possible controller configurations must be fully tested with all aspects of the game. All comes down to quality control.

Possible for the most part, but time consuming and therefore a little expensive. I've seen games do it (I think) and there really isn't a big code block on it.

Most of the control schemes you see in games are usually the result of hours of research and focus testing (and more focus testing). When we get mostly positive feedback on various layouts that will satisfy the most number of people, we usually go with it."
End quote

That is why i say put it on the console side not in game/developers side

I actually don't remember if Forza 3 has custom button maps or not...I think it has a few presets but that's all I remember.

I was just hoping my video i show how far y gas button is from left analog steering. I love racing games too, so ultra drag.

If I get a chance I'll throw Forza 3 in and see if they have changed gas/brake button maps, I don't believe that they have completely mappable buttons.

Have you considered getting a wheel? You might have an easier time with a wheel and no pedals. If you've got no pedals I assume the game has to map the gas and break to the buttons on the wheel. Say, a MS wheel which you could bolt to your desk or table.

Just a thought.

I signed. This is an awesome idea. I have worked with some special needs kids, not all of them with a mental disability. Some of them have limited mobility due to disease or were simply recovering from lost limbs and fingers etc. They can't do normal things that kids like to do. They did have a Nintendo at the day care that some kids would play on and others watched. I could tell that they really wanted to play as well, but the inability to hit certain buttons made this not possible for some of them. I remember one boy who didn't have index or middle fingers so hitting shoulder buttons didn't work on a N64. If those buttons could have been moved to the others then it would be a-ok.

Good going and keep up the hope.

We need to spam say Penny Arcade to do a comic about it. Charity development work would be a great thing companies could offer in the vein of Child's Play.

Project Natal would be a great tool for helping in this, given proper tuning/software, I would think. Get Bill Gates attention, and maybe he'll use his Foundation and clout at Microsoft to get something done. This could really be a big help, especially if they can find ways to work it into other devices.

I'm not a huge gamer anymore myself, but I couldn't imagine what it would be like to just plain not be able to properly play them due to disability. The fact that you still try (and succeed) is both a testament to overcoming disability (small things like learning to play a video game could very well be a big win for accomplishing this) and the inherent value of games.

Any other suggestions for sites/organizations to contact about this? I figure gaming blogs (Joystiq, Kotaku, who else?), game focused sites (Gamespot, IGN, ?), game based comics (Penny Arcade), and what others would be good?
