I eat rice with a fork and the bowl remains on the table, but my family is Filipino and extremely Americanized. I never use chopsticks for any dish, unless sushi is for some reason inexcusably drenched in some weird sauce.

I would prefer rice in a bowl (using chopsticks) with the "soong" on a seperate dish. But at home and being lazy has led me to put everything on a paper plate and eating it with a plastic fork =/. No dishes to cleanup this way.

I don't use condiments at all unless it's part of the dish .. like the sauce you use with peking duck to make those little sandwiches or when hot potting.

Is it stir-fried with beef? If so then I probably know what you are talking about. It's a cantonese dish. It is awesome but usually too greasy.

Oh and I eat rice in a separate bowl with a spoon. I am proficient with chopsticks but prefer spoon for efficient gorging.

i'm chinese, if i had those small rice bowls and made family style meals with more than 1 course, then i'd use chopsticks... but normally i use my corelle bowls and use fork if i have stuff that are too big to use with spoon, or i use a spoon if its a dish like curry chicken with the sauce

IS THERE SOME SECRET I AM MISSING ABOUT EATING SAUCE-COVERED RICE WITH CHOPSTICKS?!?!?!?!?! IT IS FREAKING IMPOSSIBLE!!!!!

Sauce belongs in a separate tiny dish. You don't drench the rice in sauce. You dip meats and such in it.

In Vietnam they served the food on top of the rice. I am not the rice drencher, they are!

Unless it was fried rice, that isn't traditional. Traditional, is each item is separate along with the sauce.

The best way to eat anything imho.

you can go to asian store, or buy calrose rice (california grown, short grain) and cook it properly in a rice cooker, should turn out right.

There are some Vietnamese dishes where you get the food on top of the rice but more than likely the sauce will still be separate. You'll often see these in restaurants or smaller places. The traditional family lunch/dinner, however, includes rice in the small bowls and separate food/soup, with chopstick and spoons of course :D

Spoon and rice on plate. But then I'm filipino. I actually didn't learn how to use chopsticks until I was in high school.

My personal technique does not matter, since I'm not in the "asian crew" as the OP posted.

Chopsticks, rice on table.

Although it depends. A lot of Koreans eat rice w/spoons instead of chopsticks.

I mix it all up and eat it with a fork. Oh wait.. I'm not Asian.

Depends on what I am eating really. If you are talking about steamed rice with dishes, yeah definitely chopstick. But if you are talking about fried rice or steamed rice topped with goodies, then spoon. And always in a bowl. Plate of rice only in restaurants, even there you are supposed to scoop into your own bowl with the provided spoon then eat with your own spoon.

Soy sauce on steamed white rice tastes good. I don't really cares if its not proper or not.

edit: NM. I'm not asian.

Sauce-covered rice is new school. We Asians don't touch new school.

Obviously. You guys are still eating with sticks ;):p
