"Traditional" or not, that is how Vietnamese people eat. I was also served in private homes where the sauce and meat were placed on top of the rice.
That is odd, since most viets I know, eat it like my family.

What do you use.
I use a chopstick, with the bowl in hand.

Do Chinese have a dish that is sort of like chow mien, but instead it is made with flat rice noodles, and it is fried. Not chow fun noodles, around 1cm wide.
Not that I know of.Originally posted by: DVK916

I use anything thats on the table. However I do get slightly pissed off when I visit asian restaurants and they take the chopsticks away and put a fork in its place(for me only). I can use chopsticks damnit...don't discriminate on my age![]()

That sounds like Pad Thai, but that isn't Chinese of course.

Pan fried? Rice cakes? Pad Thai uses clear noodles. They're moderately thin, so this doesnt sound like Pad Thai.

You guys must be Japanese or Korean because in China and Vietnam the sauce is not always served seperate and dry.
My family is from Vietnam, and that is how we always eat food with rice, each item is separate, including sauce.
I had it that way too, where we dipped fried anchovies into dipping sauce like you describe. Maybe the people serving me thought I was a stupid white guy who needs his rice drenched.

Each item should be separated, you do NOT mix meats, veggies and rice together in one big bowl. That isn't proper.

I love sauce-covered rice.
IS THERE SOME SECRET I AM MISSING ABOUT EATING SAUCE-COVERED RICE WITH CHOPSTICKS?!?!?!?!?! IT IS FREAKING IMPOSSIBLE!!!!!
Sauce belongs in a separate tiny dish. You don't drench the rice in sauce. You dip meats and such in it.
True. It always irks me to see white people drowning their rice in Soy Sauce. I don't even know how you eat something that salty...

um..that does not sound good at all...so the 1cm wide noodle is crunchy?

There's nothign wrong with a little sauce, NOT SOY SAUCE. IF you ever put that into rice, you should be shot. But come on, you all agree that sometimes adding a little sauce, like the sauce from your beef brocolli or your bulgolgi korean bbq makes the rice a lot better. I'm not saying this as an ABC, but my grandpa from Taiwan loves to add a little sauce into his rice here and there. My mom does that when she gives me rice if there's a good dish out there, although I complain that I don't like her doing it and I'd rather do it myself.
Oh. I thought you meant deep fried or something. I do know there are flat rice noodles, but I can't recall if I've ever had any that were stir-fried.Originally posted by: DVK916

When I say fried, I mean stir fried.
Sorry, if it wasn't clear.
It isn't crunchy.

You Asians are the ones who provided me with the sauce covered rice. Then you provide me with chopsticks, knowing full well it will be impossible to finish the plate with such a utensil. I have a feeling this is all some communist plot to distract me while Chinese agents infiltrate the country..
