That is odd, since most viets I know, eat it like my family.

Do Chinese have a dish that is sort of like chow mien, but instead it is made with flat rice noodles, and it is fried. Not chow fun noodles, around 1cm wide.

That sounds like Pad Thai, but that isn't Chinese of course.

What, are you 3?

I'm not Asian, but I eat with chopsticks and usually with the bowl on the table.

Pan fried? Rice cakes? Pad Thai uses clear noodles. They're moderately thin, so this doesnt sound like Pad Thai.

Depends on the rice. If sticky, chopsticks are good. If not, spoon; I haven't used my hands since I was 5.

What's the name of the sticky rice? My local shop sells Minute and Basmati that I know of.

about the separate food / rice thing, a lot of cultures in asia serve food on top of rice. The food sometimes are not dry and sauce will be on the rice.

I grew up in chinese and japanese culture, if that helps :)

My family is from Vietnam, and that is how we always eat food with rice, each item is separate, including sauce.

I had it that way too, where we dipped fried anchovies into dipping sauce like you describe. Maybe the people serving me thought I was a stupid white guy who needs his rice drenched.

Usually, when you say sauce it means dipping right? At least thats how it is in western culture. By sauce for Chinese cooking, you mean you dump soy sauce and seasame oil into your food when you pan fry it and thats the sauce. Of course you never separate that stuff.

Each item should be separated, you do NOT mix meats, veggies and rice together in one big bowl. That isn't proper.

True that, but what's faster? I don't wanna wash 5 dishes. I live ALONE. It doesnt make sense at all for me to sit down at the dinner table with my rice bowl and 4 other dishes in front of me. Yes I do it from time to time like when I have nothing to do, but not very often. I'm eating my food right now as I'm typing on my computer.

Yes when I have a family I will make them sit down each with a rice bowl and the dishes in the middle of the table, but until then I'll stay lazy.

IS THERE SOME SECRET I AM MISSING ABOUT EATING SAUCE-COVERED RICE WITH CHOPSTICKS?!?!?!?!?! IT IS FREAKING IMPOSSIBLE!!!!!

Sauce belongs in a separate tiny dish. You don't drench the rice in sauce. You dip meats and such in it.

True. It always irks me to see white people drowning their rice in Soy Sauce. I don't even know how you eat something that salty...

There's nothign wrong with a little sauce, NOT SOY SAUCE. IF you ever put that into rice, you should be shot. But come on, you all agree that sometimes adding a little sauce, like the sauce from your beef brocolli or your bulgolgi korean bbq makes the rice a lot better. I'm not saying this as an ABC, but my grandpa from Taiwan loves to add a little sauce into his rice here and there. My mom does that when she gives me rice if there's a good dish out there, although I complain that I don't like her doing it and I'd rather do it myself.

Not that I know of.

It is just low chow fun, but the noodles aren't an inch wide, more like 1cm wide.

When I say fried, I mean stir fried.

Sorry, if it wasn't clear.

It isn't crunchy.

 This does not matter, as long as you like it. I used to love putting soy sauce in my rice when i was a little kid ( living in hong kong, china).

Oh. I thought you meant deep fried or something. I do know there are flat rice noodles, but I can't recall if I've ever had any that were stir-fried.

Sauce-covered rice is new school. We Asians don't touch new school.

You Asians are the ones who provided me with the sauce covered rice. Then you provide me with chopsticks, knowing full well it will be impossible to finish the plate with such a utensil. I have a feeling this is all some communist plot to distract me while Chinese agents infiltrate the country..

You've got it figured out.;)
