ARRRRG...my job is driving me nuts

rudeguy

Lifer
I posted a thread a while ago about how my company was messing with the salesmen. They gave us unreasonable numbers to hit, cut our pay and fired a large percentage of the sales force. I transferred out of sales almost a year ago to stop the bleeding. Its been ok since then for me, the poor salespeople have continued to get shit on.

Not too long ago they announced our company was doing yet another restructuring. Now that they had trimmed down the sales department from 150 people to 30, they moved the sales department to a different center. OK fine. But they also changed my job. Instead of doing customer service, troubleshooting and retaining customers, I now am only taking disconnects. So basically every single person I talk to now is pissed off and not generally very nice.

There were two major things I liked about my job; the pay and the fact that they would pay $5k/year for my schooling. Well with the restructuring, they took away my commission plan. I now only get paid my average commission. I no longer have a chance to make more than that. Not the best time of year for that to happen but it is what it is. Well I finally was getting my ducks in a row so I could get my degree from WGU. I emailed HR to see what I needed to do to get my A+ test covered and they told me it probably won't be covered since "its not directly related to my job". That is despite the fact that the policy says that it can be used to further my employment with the company. Well I'd think working for a large ISP, A+ and a networking/security degree would definitely be in line with advancing my career at the company.

So now I'm stuck. They are messing with my money, messing with my future and are making me dread going in every day. I'd say its time to move on but its hard to match the money I am getting in Michigan's still not so great economy. I'm pissed, depressed, angry and hurt that they are treating me like this.

Thanks for listening.

Ditto.

My job has become a nightmare. Working for big companies is a pain in the ass. When I was doing General Contracting for small family owned businesses I was so much happier. Now it's impossible to make money doing that anymore so I'm stuck in the corporate cesspool suffering daily because I'm just a number on payroll that they take advantage of.

You may have to move, but I would at least start the process. If you're miserable, look for something else. Why torture yourself?

I went through a similar ordeal before the market crash. During the crash I dealt with shit management and terrible decisions brought on by a takeover. In the past 6 months, the board fired the old CEO and brought on a new guy. I'm interested in what the new guy has been spewing for the last 60 days, so things are looking up, but I was ready to start looking and make the leap.

It's difficult when you have a family and obligations, but, realistically, why stay in a position with no growth potential? Especially when that position makes you dread going to work every day?

Sucks. I had to work under one prick and almost quit, but that was temporary thanks to my job description.

If a company is laying off salespeople, that's bad bad news. Start looking.

They didn't lay them off, they fired them.

Verb
1. (transitive) (of an employer) To dismiss (workers) from employment, e.g. at a time of low business volume, often with a severance package.
I think the OP (rudeguy) meant they were laid off, not fired. :\

Doesn't lay off mean you can be re-hired if/when business picks up. Fired regardless of how business is running, you cannot be re-hired? 😕

Looks like the company is going under/being mismanaged big time. I'd polish my resume and look for better opportunities ASAP. Good Luck.

No they were fired. Mostly for numbers that were not possible to hit if following the rules. Then they fired people for not following the rules. Its a mess.

Thanks for the clarification. Looks like someone in the higher management is making bad decisions to cut operations cost.
How's the outllook of the company? Does it look dire (sinking ship) or probably still have a bright outcome despite having fewer people to handle the same load.
How the morale of everyone? Watch out for people in the higher positions start to leave. If that happens, it doesn't look good.

Well. We had 5 of our 6 managers leave at least 6 supervisors. Morale is beyond repair and has been that way for a long time. The company rotates between the "just the tip" theory of management and "spit in your eye and tell you its raining". Right now its the latter.

The company is doing great. I mean really, really profitable.

THIS is why I am glad to be out of sales. Hired/Fired is too much dependent on how the company is doing, more so than other roles, IMO.

When it really sucks is when these decisions are made by people in other locations. The company I work for is on the small side, but sometimes not small enough.

I tested out of 2 math classes. So...none. WGU wants me to have an A+ to transfer in since I don't have college credits to transfer in.

Okay so you haven't gotten yourself buried into it yet... I suggest you apply for jobs elsewhere, move out of Michigan.

Man that is the worst. Its like inhumane firing. Like a sick game.

That's the really bad part, how they treat people.

The day before Thanksgiving they fired a guy that had been there over 5 years. One of those really great human beings you only come across once in a very great while. Guy had a new baby and everything. They fired him for "numbers" that no one else was hitting.

About to start another day. My life is kind of like if an episode of Pinky and The Brain got stuck inside Groundhog's Day.

Sigh...

Dude if need be, take a paycut and work somewhere else while you get other stuff sorted out. Money isn't a good reason to be trampled on.
