Arrow keys vs WSAD keys

WSAD gets my fingers all twisted up and sucks. WASD, on the otherhand, is perfect for gaming. Arrow keys are for no-skill nooblets who often say WSAD when they mean WASD because they just don't know any better.

It puts keyboard and gamepad functionality into one small and easy-to-use device, delivering more tools for customizing your game than ever. . . . . So start programming up to 104 functions. . . .

the above IS *awesome* ... i have had it for a long time BUT ... like *oldskoolers* stuck with the arrow key ... i am *stuck* with the KB 😛

old habits 😛

:roll:

I know about them, but they're still basically keyboards, just a bit glorified. WASD may look a little better on such a device but it'll still function the same. Great for things like macros but it doesn't really change the way you control your character.

uh-uh, no

they are a very *efficient* mini-KB designed for gaming

IF ... and it is an *if* ... they suit you perfectly and/or you have the mindset to really learn it --it is quicker

i promised myself to *force* myself to learn it ...

after PREY 😉

😀

I don't think we're on the same page, it's not just the keyboard, it's the games. When forward is mapped to a single key on a keyboard, you press that key you go forward at whatever set speed there is nothing in between. If you want to slowly approach as close to the edge of a cliff as possible, you have to tap the key, you do not have analog control - that is the flaw with keyboard devices and games designed around such devices. But that is simply a problem with computer gaming - games were/are designed around the hardware the majority of computers have access to - the mouse is amazing, we're "stuck" with the keyboard, which isn't a bad thing, it just isn't ideal for many games such as action/platformers/sports (which are unsurprisingly dominant on consoles)

i still don't think we are 😛

try actually picking up a N52 before you tell me what they *look* like

it IS a KB ... just ultra programmable ... tap the 03 Key "^" and you go "forward" ... tap the 09 Key ">" and you go "right" ... it is set up exactly like WASD [or arrows] ... with keys surrounding them for quick access ... in addition you get the buttons and a thumbpad in addition to your mouse. i believe the thumpad is also analog so it can act exactly like a joystick ...

now what do you mean?
😕

and i DO have a decent Wingman joystick ... when *required* as in flight [whatever] ... it IS generally supported in PC gaming

so the consoles are generally less flexible

makes me wonder how an x-45 throttle would work to control character/weapon binds

i used to use throttle/joy to play mechwarrior and it worked excellent now I need to test it in the likes of quake 2

I'm right handed but have always used the mouse with my left hand, so I use the numpad. With the numpad you have access to about 18 keys or so, so I think it compares to WASD. Actually I think it's better because the keys are lined up better, and it's easier to feel your way around since it's a small pad and is "outlined." I'm pretty efficient with it.

I actually use ESDF. I developed this key binding when I was playing my WoW rogue and needed lots of room for special moves. This binding granted me 11 keys (plus shift, tab, caps lock, etc.) easily in reach, which allowed me to pWnzor other WoWers. I still use this binding in FPS, and A is my duck key.

Like said said there are a lot of versions out there and Tenebrae uses the same technology that Doom 3 and Riddick use.

WASD > Arrow keys except if you're left handed.

Even if you're left handed WASD is better because you have access to more keys. You can always move the damn keyboard, it isn't about positioning, it's about control. If you have to physically lift your hand (or at least move it far enough off your home position) to have access to other functions, you're putting yourself at disadvantage.

WASD/ESDF for righties, IJKL/8456 for lefties. Arrow keys for noobs. Of course there are other potential setups/combinations, the point is that the arrow keys are no longer any good for any non-brainless game out there, no matter which hand you use.

pros know that wasd is a metaphor for up left down and right :roll:

Anyone with half a brain knows that. Want a cookie for stating the obvious?

I can't explain it any simpler than that. 😛

a mod 😛

http://tenebrae.sourceforge.net/

Tenebrae is a modification of the quake source that adds stencil shadows and per pixel lights to quake. Stencil shadows allow for realistic shadow effects on every object in the game world. Per pixel lighting allows you to have fine surface details correctly lit. These are essentially the same algorithms as used by the new Doom game.
why didn't you just say so?
;confused;

😀

System Req.

* PIII 600
* 64 Mb RAM
* Geforce or Radeon card
* Quake1
* Water vissed maps
somehow i doubt it looks the *same* as the D3 engine

DX1 input system custom setup.

Kinda like WASD, i that you don't have to move your hand away from the keys to do actions...el oh el.

Arrow keys? Christ. Learn to computer.

This is a trivial topic, so it doesn't really matter but...

I would like to list some of the logical fallacies present in the original post.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hasty_generalization
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Argumentum_ad_populum
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Appeal_to_tradition

Everything he says is biased. The poll is biased, his statements are biased, his questions are biased. Anyone who disagrees with him is a noob.

There is no allowance that his statements are incorrect. He thinks we are discussing a fact, not a preference.

Note the distinct lack of evidence to support his claims.

Now, for some of my favorite quotes.

"How many people actually use the crappy WSAD way? Does everyone do this? Is that why my games all come defaulted to that bs? "
Note the use of "crappy" and "bs."

"Im betting all the WSAD people are damn lefties"
Not sure what he is trying to prove here, that lefties are noobs? Maybe it is an excuse for their noobish behavior.

"Ok, this WSAD superiority crap is getting out of hand. This theory that WSAD is awsome and arrow keys are crap needs to be trashed."
More blatant statements.

"Now, i think we need some kind of proof here."
Assuming we can prove something like this, sounds good.

"I suggest we have some kinda game of somthing to settle this. A 5v5 in somthing."
Right. The outcome of a match between 10 random people will PROVE everything.

"ill bet it was mostly WSAD people who voted for CSS"

More derogatory statements about his opponents.

"Who has all these games and is one of the unfortunate WSAD people?"
More bias.

Fortunately, the OP doesn't add anything new in any of his later responses.
