Recruiting at an all time low

I guess American kids don't want to be involved in the military? The draft has been dismissed but what's going to happen if we need to defend Tawain? Or if the war in Iraq last for an additional 2-3 years? Where are we going to get the young men to fight for us?

Robots? :Q

Why join the Army, when the Air Force is clearly the better option?

That said - they aren't pulling all the young people to fight - my mother just got orders - she is getting deployed to Afghanistan, and she's 42 years old.

You have to be f*cking kidding? 42 years old and she just got orders to go to Afghanistan?

Why are we kidding ourselves? The draft should take place but it's politics as usual. The politicans are scared sh*tless to start the draft and I'll guarantee you that if it happends on Bush's shift the Republicans are going to face a HUGE backlash from the US voters.

You'd do better in the Navy.

Uh... it's not like she didn't voluntarily sign up. And if she's in the Air Force, it's not like she'll be in combat.

Nope - she deploys for 6 months in August. :frown: Was about to retire too - she's been in for nearly 24 years. I'm more down about it than she is.

True, but god damn. I think Hitler was recruiting people at an older age because Germany was running out of people as well.

Are we heading towards the same delima?

There are people in the military. That is their career. They get assigned.

Doesn't mean they are fighting on the line. My uncle got called to afghanistan as well. seemed he had an airstrip to build/oversee.

She's not fighting it - she got orders, she's going to fulfill them whether she was planning on retiring or not. That said - they probably lock someone out of retirement once they get orders to deploy.

I can tell you from the inside that the Army is contracting out and hiring more civilians than ever right now. Many soldiers who have been what we affectionately call "chairborne rangers" are getting thrown right back into the fray once a civilian takes over their job role. There are plenty of soldiers who still haven't seen time in the sand yet, Active, Reserve, National Guard or otherwise.

yeah, we're gonna have a draft. Its inevitable.

time to move up with our gay neighbors up north.

Heh, my family is already safe. Parents are in their 50s, sister is already serving the government in the Peace Corps and I'm 3 years under drafting age :p

Who here wants to bet that they're going to draft in the blue states first? If so, my state is screwed :p

Yeah, right, that's gonna happen. I suggest you read up a bit more on how the draft works.
