I really doubt they have the actual Ark.

Why?

because religion is phoney

edit: plus they've had thousands of years and unlimited cash to come up with an elaborate forgery and backstory.

...and you just thought of this so it must be true?

The Ark has been historically documented, all religion aside. It is definitely real. If it "holds tablets created by God", that's up for debate, but the Ark itself is an actual item.

and Atlantis was also an actual place whats your point?

History fail.

Since you can't tell the difference between something that is archeologically recognized as being very probably myth and something that is archeological fact I'd recommend listening and learning from others in the thread.

Because the Bible does not say where it went, there are many theories on what happened to it, and the Orthodox Church of Ethiopia hasn't exactly been open with allowing investigation of the validity of the ark in their possession.

And they would benefit from presenting a fake because...

LIES!

The Ark was already found and opened by Indiana Jones.

It's lying in the Smithsonian/govt warehouse.

As Arcadio might say: reps?
Possessing it gains them prestige and power. To many people it is a mystical or magical device, rather than a representation of meeting with God.

It's possible that they don't know it's a fake, either.

Er, because there is no way to determine if it is the real thing (assuming it's actually old) and it will bring them lots and lots of tourist (pilgrim) dollars. This kind of thing can turn a destitute town of mud huts into Huntington beach.

The Ethiopians for a long period of time didn't want to unveil the ark because they didn't want tourism and so forth and commercialism to spoil the reverence of this object.

Whether it is the Ark or not, I have no idea.

And they would benefit from presenting a fake because...

A. They believe it's real even if it isn't
B. The leadership of the denomination knows it's not real but has decided it's a beneficial and harmless aid to faith for others
C. They know it's not real but that it would really boost the exposure and interest in the orthodox church

A few options. I'm Christian but I'm not past being cynical about human motivations.

For the record, I have no idea of it's real or not and it doesn't impact me in a more than "that's cool" kind of way. It would be neat if it were real, answer one of history's mysteries.

Actually, Atlantis currently resides cloaked in San Francisco Bay about a mile from the Golden Gate Bridge. Prior to that, it was in the Pegasus Galaxy.

I'd prefer the Ark of Truth over this piece of crap.

Though I do find it ironic that a German Pope would be the one to be presiding over the Catholic Church when it's unveiled. Makes the whole Indiana Jones thing even more funny.

After some thought, even if this isn't the actual ark, if enough people (particularly reputable scholars, archaeologists, and researchers, if they are allowed to examine it) accept it as such, it could have potentially huge political implications. I'm guessing this unveiling won't do so, but the Ark is one thing that could bring people to demand and act upon rebuilding the temple. Which wouldn't be a good thing, if you know where the temple would be rebuilt. There have been calls for rebuilding the temple in the past, but never action in the last century and now.

They should put it inside the LHC, and open it with a stream of sand particles moving at nearly the speed of light.

You sure got a thick head.... this isn't a "religious thread" its an "historical artifact thread"
If somebody posted an article about remnants of the Statue of Zeus at Olympia would it be a "religious thread"? Would you bash it about being "fake"? The Ark IS REAL (maybe not the one they are going to show off though). It has been historically documented, much like many other long-lost historical relics, to have been real, but are now lost/destroyed.

This isn't a religious thread, dolt. This is a thread about a possible historical find. It is unlikely to be a TRUE find but it is possible.

Hmm, I hope not. Not afraid of the very last days in the end times, except for the fact that I've been wasting too much of my time, not enough serving God and serving others :( I think I'll be cutting down my AT time, regardless, except for FS/FT.

The patriarch of the Orthodox Church of Ethiopia says he will announce to the world Friday the unveiling of the Ark of the Covenant, perhaps the world's most prized archaeological and spiritual artifact, which he says has been hidden away in a church in his country for millennia, according to the Italian news agency Adnkronos.

Abuna Pauolos, in Italy for a meeting with Pope Benedict XVI this week, told the news agency, "Soon the world will be able to admire the Ark of the Covenant described in the Bible as the container of the tablets of the law that God delivered to Moses and the center of searches and studies for centuries."

I don't know what made me think this had to do with religion. I guess me, the patriarch of the orthodox church of ethiopia and the pope are all dolts.

You can not know this with certainty. I think it is entirely plausible that they have a historical piece that could be identified as the fabled Ark.

FFS....the Pope is a real person who resides in a big ass church in Italy. Whether or not he has a priority line direct to God is up for debate. People aren't saying that the Arc has face melting powers or what it actually contains. They are just saying that it's a well documented historically relevant object.
