Anime is the shizzle. I just deleted all the programs and unnecessary stuff off my tiny HD so I could make more room for anime 😀 Time for a bigger HD I guess. I am primarily a Dragonaball fan (not just DBZ, all variants of DB), but I like other anime/manga as well. Initial D is the shiznit, as is Cowboy Bebop, Blue Gender, Inuyasha, Naruto, Yuyu Hakusho, Akira, Ghost in the Shell, Escaflowne, Perfect Blue, Neon Genesis, Trigun, Outlaw Star, Gundam Wing, GTO, Tenchi Muyo and a whole slew of others that I can't even think of right now. I just finished watching Grave of the Fireflies and was absolutely blown away by its depth. I was almost in tears toward the end. Definitely one of my top 10 favorite movies of all time. Spirited Away and Princess Mononoke are a couple other great anime movies.
If you're ever on Kazaa and want some DB/DBZ/DBGT just look for trogdor_the_burninator (yes, I like Homestar Runner as well). I've got a pretty extensive collection of Dragonball on my HD and it's always growing. I don't plan to stop until I have it all 🙂

Ooh, Perfect Blue gives me a headache every time I watch it 😛 Lots of other good titles in there, too. Tenchi Muyo - Gundam Wing, too, though not quite as much - will always hold sort of a special spot in my anime collection. These two were the first anime shows that I saw a couple of years ago on Cartoon Network. They are what got me started, and it's been all downhill from there 😛

All three of my roommates are crazy about anime too but I personally hate it with a passion. I have never sat down and watched any of it with them. my only exposure is when I walk by the living room or their room and they're watching that stuff. so that's something i can't avoid although i do isolate myself in my room when they are watching them. i dont know any of the stuff they watch nor do i care cause they're annoying as hell. atleast the ones they watch. all i hear is the sound of 10 year old girls screaming at each other in japanese. don't get me wrong, i'm asian too but you can't tell me that kind of stuff isn't annoying. The more i hear of them, the greater my hatred grows towards anime.

i'm sure there are some good ones out there but from what i've been exposed to by my 18-20 year old roommates, i'll be ignorant and pass.

Although I am not a hardcore anime nerd, I did watch Dragonball Z when I was a kid (I lived in Japan, back around when Trunks first went back into the past to kill Frieza), and so it has a sentimental value to me.

I have watched other animes (Cowboy Bebop, Hellsing) and I enjoy them. Saying you don't like them at all is just like saying you hate movies in general - some animes have good plots, art direction, and artwork. Why is it so bad if it's a cartoon and real actors?

u're grouping DBZ (which is one of my least favorite anime) with a who bunch of good ones. although i do have to give DBZ credit for attracting me into anime.

some series u might want to watch that might change your mind are:
Rurouni Kenshin (sword fighting)
Nartuo (ninja)
Hikaru no Go (go - as in black and white board game)
Flame of Recca (ninja)
Initial D (rice rockets)
Cowboy Bebop (bounty hunter)

and many many more.

The most famous anime in America would be the ones by Hayao Miyazaki which include Spirited Away, Princess Mononoke, My Neighbor Totorro, Nausicca, and many more.

If you liked the Matrix, which the Wachowski brothers claimed to be very anime-oriented, meaning the angles and the sequence of actions are very similar to anime, then you should definitely give anime another shot.

What an insightful and well-thought-out argument! I never would have thought of that until you brought it up! How did you ever arrive at such a conclusion? Years of study? Did you attend a special school?

Seriously though, what was the point of your post? Comeon, two words? If you can't do any better than that why even post? It's too bad ignorance and stupidity aren't illegal...

I think the answer here is obvious. Your friends watch anime because....... (revelation of the century)... they LIKE it!

Perhaps they find the stories engrossing, the characters interesting, whatever. I say if it brings in the utils and it's not bothering anyone, let them enjoy it.

As mentioned many times previously in this thread (and soooo many others in OT - try searching for them), there is good anime and bad anime, and saying that you dislike/hate all anime based on viewing very little of it, is like saying you hate all movies because you were one of the three people who saw "Gigli." 😉

For those of you who wish to remain ignorant of this wonderful medium: Fine, dandy, you've made your choice, and you're only depriving yourself.

Let me add "Hoshi No Koe" to the Must-See anime list. Wow, just wow.

<puts on flame suit>
Let me also say that I love Dragonball/Dragonball Z (dubbed, no less). I had to watch a couple of episodes before I understood what the heck was going on, and a few more before I liked it, but then I got totally hooked. Is the series silly, shallow, simplistic, "kiddified", and just basically consists of guys beating the crap out of each other? Well...Yes...but it's FUN! 😀 It's kind of like returning to the comic books of the late 70's/early 80's that I liked as a kid.

Oh, and Pokemon sucks.

I enjoy dbz but the show progresses way to slow, it could have been done in half the episodes... I really liked animes like Escaflowne, Trigun, Cowboy Bebop, Outlaw Star, Nadesico, and .hack//SIGN, there are many other good ones but I haven't watched all of them yet... watch a couple episodes of .hack//SIGN and see what you think you can dl them all over the net in ogm format.

frankly, i'm not sure why it's so incredibly popular. i never knew why pokemon was so popular either, (i think pokemon is anime, isn't it?) and so i guess that's where america was exposed to anime. anyays, a few weeks back, my brother came home and he had a hard drive full of anime, including dbz, gundam, wildstriker and many more. the thing is, he's 22 years old!!! unbelievable. well, i watched a few episodes, and i guess they're ok. i didnt have enough time to get involved in the story really, but i did like wildstriker (great soccer anime (i love soccer))

First dbz sucks try these Initial d,Ninja scrolls also the tv series,E's otherwise,Last exile,Berserk,Fist of the north star(not the series it sucks),Bubble gum crisis,Grappler baki (1 &2nd season),Project arms (1&2nd season), Ghost in the shell (tv series also good),Shadow skill,Jo-jo bizare adventure,Record of the lodoss war,Md geist,Vampire d bloodlust ect ect. These are just to get you started. There are plenty more anime from diffrent styles like comedy and hentai. Best of all most or all of these can be downloaded for free. Anime is just like movies some are good other suck, but to dismiss everything because of dbz. That's just wrong.

I'll be 22 in less than 3 months and I have a hard drive full of anime and I just bought another one so I can fill that up with anime too 🙂 What's wrong with that?
On a related note: if any of you are manga fans I suggest you stop by your local suncoast store because they're having a fantastic deal on manga right now. I spent $22.45 and walked out of the store with three issues of Shonen Jump (July, September, October) as well as the first three volumes of the original Dragonball manga. Best $22.45 I've ever spent 🙂

Crap man, what more do you want for $4.95?? There's over 300 pages of manga in every issue and hardly any advertising! I'd say they're doing a damn good job. I wish I could read kanji and got the real thing (Shonen weekly/monthly) but until that day comes, I'll just stick to the Americanized version of Shonen Jump.

hahaha this is the funniest thread i've read in a long time. thank-you for hating anime just as much as i do.

I watch whatever is interesting. Don't care if its animated or not. Why hate them because they are presented in a different manner? As for content, that varies greatly just like it does in every show/movie.

*shrug*

Not sure why people are so ignorant to hate something they don't even really know. It's like saying "I hate all Holywood movies because i watched that POS movie Ecks vs. Sever."

Never knew watching anime was cool or a fad. Here in California is pretty normal, nothing new, nothing cool about it....

Too many people watch anime because it's anime. This REALLY pisses me off.

There are so many good animated features out of Japan that get lost in all the "Anime fan" crap.

I'm embarrased to have enjoyed Kasuhiro Otomo's "Memories" because so many people immediately think that makes me an anime lamer.

Pokemon and Final Fantasy CONVINCED every little brat that anything from Japan should be respected. BAH!

what's to really know about anime? sketches of people in blue hair fighting in the air. the end.

i guess if you haven't seen the originals, you wouldn't notice the editted out backgrounds and sound effects. piss poor lazy editting. amateur scanslators > shonen jump

Thanks for confirming the ignorance of people who hate anime.

you're welcome?

It's my choice to hate anime because brxndxn pretty much summed it up. She-ra could kick Sailor Moon's ass anyday.

You're right - too many people do watch anime simply because it's anime. But some actually watch it for the content and the manner in which its presented (such as myself). I grew up on cartoons and comics, as most every child does and I happen to prefer Japanese cartoons and comics to their American counterparts ATM. That's not to say I like all anime or all manga, just that I like it more than most of the crappy cartoons & comics that've been coming out lately in the U.S.
Anyway, I don't see why all you anime-haters hate anime/anime fans so much... Is it really that important to you what cartoons someone watches or what comics they read and what country they happen to be from?

True that. What a jackass. I can only think of one anime that even comes close to what you're talking about and that's Dragonball (and you didn't even get the hair color right). You've obviously never seen quality anime such as Spirited Away, Princess Mononoke, Grave of the Fireflies, or any of the numerous others mentioned in this thread. Until you've done so, keep your anime commentary to yourself. How can you judge the quality of something you know nothing about?

You don't get it, do you? Based on what I've seen of anime, either it's very disgustingly sexist and crude, or it's full of fighting and stuff making me dizzy. WTF do I want to watch something that doesn't interest me for? Now you're gonna call me a jackass because I choose to lead an Anime-free life? So anyways...

how much anime have you seen? which series? and yes, there are sexist and crude anime series, just like there are sexist and crude movies. hate movies too?
