Well for love story I havent watched any of the "good" love series, so I just tossed that one in.
Have you watched wolf's rain? If you havent you should really check it out, I did make it sound pretty dumb with my little statement 🙂 But its actually a pretty good anime.

Then one of my roommates made me watch Kenshin. At first, I hated it. Then I found it funny. Then the story hit me and I couldn't stop watching. I then progressed to Cowboy Bebop. Thats about the only anime I have watched. I don't like that cute anime. Only the serious stuff interests me.

If something is going to be unrealistic it has to exist within a different world. That's the basic gist of it. Otherwise it's make believe silly nonsense. Thisis also why I hate movies with jackie chan in them and why crouching tiger hidden dragon was an unwatchable piece of rubbish.

Even though i like the anime i have bought/downloaded myself, once someone turned on some anime at a lan party that depicted rape in it and i lost it.
There are some sick people out there, fortunately its not all like that.

Quite right. There were a few guys in my college dorm who were into anime. I finally decided to see what the whole fuss was about and popped in for their nightly viewing. Within five minutes - WHAM. Blue demon tentacle, "doing her like Kobe did". Out of nowhere. No warnings. No nothing. No subtitle to say "Oh no! Demon cock!" Just BAM, sodomy.

I don't religioulsy watch anime. But if someone tells me that this series is really good and I trust them I will watch it. They can be fun to watch as movies are intended to be forms of escapism. I'm not gonna model my life of them or try to pretend anime is anything other than entertainment.
Yeah, fair enough. I still enjoy a lot of realistic stuff even if the setting is still "Earth" or whatever (most of time it's not meant to be our Earth anyway... more of an alternate reality type situation). The same goes for movies and books i read too. I find that unrealistic stuff makes for a better escape from the real world (i.e. easier to lose myself in the story and forget about my sh1tty day at work).
I love anime because it is make believe silly nonsense 🙂 I can see why you don't like anime in general because a lot of it is unrealistic and set in this world. Hmm... you might still want to check out juuni kokki, it is set in "our world" but pretty much the whole story takes place in another world that our world is connected to.

I can't stand anime, any of it. And yes, i've been subjected to most of the attempts at entertainment mentioned in this thread from friends who are addicted to it. I'll stick with family guy, dilbert, free for all, etc...

No, that's every form of entertainment we have. Just pop music? Um...
Sitcoms with all damn near the same theme? Check.
Movies? Check.
Cop shows? Check.
Real cop shows? Check.
Talk shows? Check.
Crappy music? Check.
Cartoons? Check.
Facts of entertainment:
1. 90% of everything sucks.
2. Every good idea spawns a thousand flawed imitations.
3. The fact that it's been done before doesn't mean it can't be done better.
...and for some reason, some people think DBZ and Gundam (all its variants...yecch) don't fall into that 90%.

I've seen a good bit of Anime and I have _never_ seen any act of intercourse at all, let alone something like that.
Of course, no-one likes everything and nothing is liked by everyone so you're perfectly free to have your preferences. I have enough odd tastes that I'm used to people not sharing them. 🙂

I prefer to take a middle ground on this subject - I watch both, or at least attempt to. Having tried that, I find that there are some shows I can watch both ways, some where I prefer the Japanese dub & English subtitles, and others where I prefer to watch the English dub. Having watched quite a few dubs, I think Cowboy Bebop is one of the most well-done that I've ever heard. I like the English voices. At the other extreme is Love Hina - I cannot stand the English dub on this thing, especially Mitsune Konno as a southern belle with an accent so thick you could cut it with a knife. :| (Actually, if you'll allow me a moment to be really picky, I prefer the fansub over the studio's. Motoko the Kendo Witch! 😛) Also, as has been pointed out before, sometimes the scripts of the sub and the dub are considerably different, so it's interesting to watch them both ways. Lupin III: The Castle of Cagliostro is the only example of this that I can think of off the top of my head; the sub translation seems a lot more cut-and-dried (read boring) than the dub. This may be the way the film was intended, but I still like the dub better. It's simply all a matter of personal prefference.
To make a long story short - I could go on for quite a while 😛 - Don't judge anime as a whole by what your brother and his/your friends are watching. If you're curious, do a little investigating yourself; someplace in your neighborhood should have a few DVDs to rent, or perhaps you could find someone to borrow them from. Several good suggestions have been made in this thread already. Drop me a PM if you'd like to talk about this any more.

Anime is the shizzle. I just deleted all the programs and unnecessary stuff off my tiny HD so I could make more room for anime 😀 Time for a bigger HD I guess. I am primarily a Dragonaball fan (not just DBZ, all variants of DB), but I like other anime/manga as well. Initial D is the shiznit, as is Cowboy Bebop, Blue Gender, Inuyasha, Naruto, Yuyu Hakusho, Akira, Ghost in the Shell, Escaflowne, Perfect Blue, Neon Genesis, Trigun, Outlaw Star, Gundam Wing, GTO, Tenchi Muyo and a whole slew of others that I can't even think of right now. I just finished watching Grave of the Fireflies and was absolutely blown away by its depth. I was almost in tears toward the end. Definitely one of my top 10 favorite movies of all time. Spirited Away and Princess Mononoke are a couple other great anime movies.
If you're ever on Kazaa and want some DB/DBZ/DBGT just look for trogdor_the_burninator (yes, I like Homestar Runner as well). I've got a pretty extensive collection of Dragonball on my HD and it's always growing. I don't plan to stop until I have it all 🙂
