Aren't magnets near hard drives a bad thing?

I know they are bad for floppies but aren't they bad for hard drives as well.

I recently put together another system and the case that I got had a speaker in front just above where a fan would go and about two inches below where the hard drive would go. The hard drive is mounted in a metal cage, so I pull the cage from the case and I go to put it back so I will know how to fit it back in..

I feel a strong pull on the metal cage to the speaker. So I pull the speaker out and play around with it..This sucker is strong, picking up screwdrivers from just the point and all. Now this sucker would have been sitting very close to my hard drive and would have been less than an inch away if I had mounted it in the lower bracket. Is this bad?

This is the only thing I found bad with the case(thick side panels and all..can barely hear it running with a delta cpu fan.

Well, if you take a HD drive apart, you'll notice that it has two Honking stout magnets inside. Hence I don't think it's that big of a problem

So I could put as many refrigerator magnets on my case and it would not affect anything other than the eyesore factor?

Only if you use Type R magnets 😉

The platters are connected to the motor, which works by a magnet.

And as somebody said there are a few VERY strong magnets that work the arm.

Don't worry about it.

<< They are covered by enough metal I think only an extremly large magnet would do anything. >>

Well the one in the speaker was pretty strong and it was on the inside...

What are type R magnets?

LOL! - they are magnets that are faster than regular magnets due to the large red letter "R" emblazoned on the back.
