I agree on most accounts that windows/MS stuff is sub-par, but so is OSX really. Any environment that tries to anticipate your needs is going to fall flat on it's face, but people get used to it, and it's ok. I prefer to have total control and make my computer work the way I want, as much as possible. This is not possible on a commercial, desktop operating system, but I'm not gonna bash everyone because they're not l33t unix haxxorz, it's ok. I am not a preachy linux freak, but I do sincerely think that linux (or a derivative, or an equivelant, etc) will win the desktop. I see MS doing more and more things to restrict people and people are resisting it. My job is switching from windows to linux (yes, on the desktop too) and we're just some little newspaper in iowa.

I'll bash it if it derserves the attention.

That's a good article by the way.

I run Netware 6.0 and Win 2000 Server.

Absolutely no question about which Directory and Security structure is better.

Unfortunately, CEO's and non-IT Directors make their decisions based on "Gadget" magazines and not on industry knowledge.

It's quite funny that most of the people who say Windows sucks, actually use Windows.

1. I'm MS bashing from a Network OS Perspective. And I only use Win2K Server by CEO Directive.

Then get a new CEO. Preferably one who's not so gullable or one who is less likely to believe MS propoganda. :D

Oh man if it were that easy!!!! :D Literally, this guy gets off the plane and his first stop back in the shop is to drop off magazines and web printouts of gadgets he saw people using on the plane. :| I wouldn't at all call it a "Saving Grace", but this CEO's actually very, very good at promoting our company - he just has his head up his @$$ regarding IT, and expects everyone else to make up for his ignorance. :disgust:

It?s all bad Karma from 15 years of shoddy products and illegal business practices. Keep it coming I say!

Edit: The guy is a 35 year old professional and I have seen better arguments from teenagers here on ATOT.

True, it's just that in general the masses tend to discredit valid arguments based on predisposed stereotypes which are easy to label. Unfortunately, "youth" draws much of this ire regardless of how valid or well expressed the argument is. This writer's intent is to speak to the interest of readers who value "Years" of experience and technical skill regarding a broad range of subject.

Windows XP and 2000 do crash. Period.

They are better, but not as good as they could be.

Most problems like this come from bad drviers and/or hardware support.

Like the author of the article, I am an IBMer ... and even though we're "supposed" to hate MS, some of us live in reality... where we use their products because it helps our productivity. You can credit this to "familiarity" if you want, but the fact is that they produce software that is, for the most part, intuitive. I've used a lot of IBM software (currently, and quietly, ranked #2 behind MS)... and it's just not as "intuitive" for a newbie to learn. It's not IBM's forte yet, as much as we'd love it to be on par. Even the big push for Linux for now is much talk and little action, as far as the end-users are concerned. Give it a few more years...

I've contributed my share of MS bashing in the past, because their Exchange software causes grief, but there isn't anything that's much of a better solution unless you like how slow Lotus Notes runs (God help me) or the antiquated Novell stuff...

You just have to go with the best offering of the times... and for now... that's MS. Even though most of our $89 billion annual revenue is made off of Linux servers supporting services, a good portion is still run on MS' stuff ... :D

at work one of our servers are running 2003 server and it has been very stable so far, much more robust then 2kserver that we were running on the same machine. The new kernal mode driver (http.sys) has made diffrence we can see better more efficient thread handling, bandwidth throggling (IIS6 webserver) 2003 server has come long way since the nt4 days. im so far impressed with 2003server.

I like microsoft. I like many of their games, I absolutely love win2k (haven't spent much time with XP), and I like their software development technologies.

Regarding Novell, you must be referring to older versions of GroupWise (Pre 5.0). GroupWise 6.0 and now 6.5, very good stuff. In fact, roll in the TCO, Administration, Directory Services, Security, remote connectivity, Built-in Secure mobile messaging = Exchange doesn't hold a candle to GroupWise.

I'm migrating GroupWise 6.0 to Exchange 2000 right now per CEO directive. The security and admin issues w/IIS and AD are staggering compared to NDS & eDirectory.

Which apostrophes did he not use/misuse?

true dat...

people "in the know" love the underdog because they don't like being associated with the "sheep" who pay full price or just buy it because it is the most marketed/profitable...

personally I don't care..as long as it works and works well enough then I am happy...I have yet to find something as easy to work with as Windows, crashing and all...Macs are nice, but I don't like working with them as much as PCs.
