Did I speak with you the other night? I called 3 people from AT, not sure if you were one of them.

Profit margins are nice if you find a niche market and go after it. In my case it's local web hosting catering to the small business market.

^ yeah we spoke via AIM and you did convince me of all the benefits with little work (except that marketing caveat) ;) ... I was just asking the OP what his profits are at this point... being a "n00b" himself (well 5 months ago).

I'm making about 1.5k a year now. Not bad for just word of mouth, and maybe 20 mins a month of work.

Nice :)

A few questions for you if you don't mind

1) Which reseller web host are you using and why (is it still clook.net)?
2) What billing/support control panel do you use, is it still WhoisCart?
3) How do you advertise/market your services?
4) You're using cPanel right?
5) With or without Fantastico?
6) What about RVSkin?
7) What type of web hosting clients are you targetting? For me it's local families and small businesses.
8) What web hosting plans do you offer, specs, prices and do you offer cPanel access?
9) Do you receive a lot of new business from referrals and word of mouth?
10) How much time per week do you spend on billing/support issues for your clients?
11) How do you accept payments? If you accept cc's do you use 2co/paysystems, cdgcommerce or a real merchant account?

Thanks :)

The first goal is to break even.

After that $50/mo

Then $100/mo

The sky is the limit after that.

A few questions for you if you don't mind

1) Which reseller web host are you using and why (is it still clook.net)?
Still with Clook. Had great service so far and nice not having to worry about that aspect of things. I know they do daily backups and servers are in top shape
2) What billing/support control panel do you use, is it still WhoisCart?
Don't even use whoiscart. Normally just get checks or cash.(decided to stick with a local market)
3) How do you advertise/market your services?
Been getting most of my business through referrals, and my mom tosses her agents my way.
4) You're using cPanel right?
Yup
5) With or without Fantastico?
Clook uses something like fantastico from cpskins works basically the same.
6) What about RVSkin?
When they implemented RVSkin it was a nice change the customization you can do in cpanel were nice if you didn't want a client to have access to a certain feature. Its a very flexible skin, and I love it.
7) What type of web hosting clients are you targetting? For me it's local families and small businesses.
They are all from either agents in my moms travel agency, or some local businesses that a friend designed and had me host. I'm thinking about pushing the local market, its a goldmine:D
8) What web hosting plans do you offer, specs, prices and do you offer cPanel access?
Most of the clients don't care the specs they get their traffic is low enough where it doesn't matter. I have most on a 100mb/1gb plan, but if they need more I'd be pretty flexible with it. They have cpanel access, but none of them know how to use it so it doesn't matter:p. I charge 17-25 a month depending on how I feel that day, probably will go to 20 or 25 for everyone once thier current plan is up(they all did 1 year)
9) Do you receive a lot of new business from referrals and word of mouth?
I get it all from that, I've never advertised.
10) How much time per week do you spend on billing/support issues for your clients?
1-2 mins. They're all really basic sites and basically static.
11) How do you accept payments? If you accept cc's do you use 2co/paysystems, cdgcommerce or a real merchant account?
I take cash check paypal or I can also take CC through my moms travel agency.

Thanks :)[/quote]

Currently I'm talking with my mom about some more clients. She owns a travel agency that other agents book through her, and she has monthly plans for them. Shes thinking about adding a basic website to her package, so all her agents(about 25) will have the option of a website. IF that goes through I'll be pretty happy:D

Thats with me not doing any advertising at all. I have 6 clients all paying about $250 a year. Plus I get all my hosting for free.

To revive a semi-dead post....

Just took the plunge and got a reseller account on 8-95. I'd definately like to thank RossMAN and Fiveohhh for all the info in this post . Starting off slow with just some friends and associates. Hopefully this can bloom in to something larger where I can just get paid to surf.....wait, that's what I do here at work. :0

Question for the resellers

Have you ever had a resellers account and then have the "parent host" go out-of-business?

That seems like a significant risk to me. How would you go about handling such a situation?

thanks

ttown, you get what you pay for. The biggest hosting business flop I know of is the old cyberwings.
