I just got mine setup and my first customer, and decided to share my experience for those that are thinking about it.
I had looked into reseller accts off and on for awhile. Finally decided to get one since it was time to renew my acct from the prev host. Looked into different hosts for awhile, and after some recommendations from Rossman went with Clook They were a bit pricier than most, but with Rossman's recommendations and some searching on WHT I figured the service and uptime were worth it.
I than searched through WHT for a few days and learned a bit about how to set it up. And was surprised at how easy it was. Once I got my acct info from Clook I logged into my WHM and played around for a little. In WHM you setup your your different plans that you can sell. There are options for how many emails, bandwidth, storage, ftp accounts, mysql database, and lots of other stuff. Once you have your plans setup, its you just give your customers the nameservers, and get their domain, and enter it into WHM, and as soon as the DNS get propagated they're ready to go. From here your customer goes to www.theirdomain.com/cpanel and they have their own cpanel to go in and do their thing.
I'd like to say one thing though if you have no idea what your doing learn some basics on how the internet and webservers work, if your going to do some hosting for some actually clients(not just friends). You can save yourself the headache and your customers the hassle if you can help them directly as opposed to shuffling back and forth between talking to your host, and your client if theres a problem.
I don't have anything setup for billing yet, but again you can do a search on WHT and there are lots of options. You can get an acct with PaySystems, 2checkout, or another and take credit cards. With some of the cart options I looked at that integrate into WHM. You can setup recurring bills, and it pretty much automates everything for you. Again don't jump in over your head if you have 20 accts and no idea what your doing, its a disaster waiting to happen. If you have any questions on the process feel free to pm me, and will do what i can to help.
I've only had experience with cPanel/WHM but its very intuitive, and I had things setup in no time. There are other options, but cpanel/WHM seems to be the most popular.
Update 4/6:
I got Whoiscart awhile back and figure I'd post a small update. I've only used it for testing purposes, but setup was fairly easy. If you need a payment system I'd recommend it. It was cheap(got a 3 pack so $20 a license, otherwise they are $35 for an individual. Once you have a license you can get additional licenses for $25 each. Setup would have been a lot nicer had they had they had the manual for 2.2 up, but the old manual still worked(was a bit tricky to follow though since they changed things around. If you do decide to go with whoiscart make sure you use their diagnostics package to see if your server has everything ready for it. I haven't had any experience skinning it(default skin is pretty generic), so not sure how hard it is to do, but they also have forums that have a skinning section. lastly I only had it setup with paypal, and it was pretty easy to get that going. Just need a paypal address and your ready to accept paypal through Whoiscart.
