I'm prejudiced, not racist. Get it right

This is the problem with the word "racist", its definition has been mangled.

Jesse Jackson himself has said that if he had the choice between walking down a dark street at night and passing a couple of young white teenagers versus a couple of young black teenagers, he'd choose the former. Is he racist? While it's debatable in his case ;), the key word here is prejudiced, he's making a prejudgement about the situation based on what he knows to be true.

Is it wrong to be prejudiced?

I think to me racist implies that i acknowledge the differences between a white person and a black person. I am racist, but i am not violent about it and it doesnt' effect my choices in life.

ive lived in london for 28 years, probably the most cosmopolitan city in the world, and never judged anyone by their appearance.

i couldnt give a shit if you had 3 heads, i'd still treat you with same respect as anyone else.

would it be fair, if i judged all americans, by some of the morons who've posted in this thread?

Racism equals hate.

Not all people are racist because not all people hate other races. Like the Op's post, the majority of people just form a bias due to personal circumstances, doesn't mean it's hatred towards a whole group of people.

People also choose to define others by color of skin. "This black guy yelled at me" "We had a black waiter and he was really polite" Instead of "Oh this guy yelled at me because of his awful driving" or "Our waiter was very polite"

I admit too that I've been intimidated before by someone else skin color, but it's just something you have to get over, especially if you've grown up in plaes that aren' very diverse.

Like where I'm from has a very very very large hispanic population, probably over 50%. I feel perfectly comfortable in like Mexican grocery stores and if I'm the only white kid in a hispanic bar. But I've had encounters where I've been the only white guy in predominately black places, and it has made me uncomfortable. Not because of racism, but just because of my own ignorance and inexperience. Turns out that was the best fried chicken I'd ever had.

Whenever I go to the popeyes near here several of the black people in there will stare at me like WTF am I, a white person, doing in THEIR restaraunt.

I've also had black people ask me what I am doing owning a 96 impala ss

I'm like some others....
Race may play a bit in the beginning before I know the person... but once I get to know someone, it plays less of a factor. I know some immigrants from Sudan who are some of the hardest working people I know.. I respect them... but they still fall into some of the stereotypes... weed smoking, womanizing, partying...

Usually, if I have negative first impressions of somebody from another race, it's usually after I've heard them talk and seen how they dress... I am quick to think someone is fucking retarded after talking to them for 2 minutes, regardless of their race. And I have little patiences for people I see as being fucking retarded...

Something else from my own experiences... I grew up in a city with about 85% white and 6% black population.... But I knew more racist black people than white people.
I guess racist black people are so much more open about it... because they don't think they are even being racist. They think that it's not racist to call a white person cracker. It really pisses me off... the double standard. If I get called a cracker, I instantly retort (unless i have reason to fear for my life) by calling them the N word, just because of the principle of it...

I'm somewhat similar.
I think its impossible to like everybody equally. But I know I hate everybody equally.
I dont hate based on skin color, and I dont automatically want to hang out with other white people just because I'm white.
Nor am I more inclined to judge a white person better than a black person in any given situation.

So I guess I'm really not racist. You dont need to be a particular color to invoke my ire.

Having said that, if this nonsense with the illegal aliens swarming up from Mexico does not get resolved soon, its entirely possible I will turn racist.

And if it was statistically proven that 3-headed people were 500% more likely to commit violent crimes than 1-headed people, you're saying it wouldn't in any way affect how you behave around them? ;)

I'd have to say that unfortunatly I am, porbably due to growing up in a rich white town. However, I don't allow my upbringing to affect my judgement and attitude towards non-white people. I'm more biased on general appearance, eg. people wearing ghetto clothes, white or black or whatever. Skin color does not represent anything other than climatic condition adaptations.

My step mother, however, is a racist bigot, and I truely hate her for it. She is always making crude racist jokes, she went on for days when one of her client's daughters married a black man, and she's teaching my half siblings to be bigots as well. I just hope they are intelligent enough to reject the shit she spews from her mouth.

Yes, I'm racist against assholes. I don't care if what color, gender, or religion they are... if they're assholes, I hate 'em!

Yes, but not really against black people like some in this thread are. I've never met a black person that I didn't like, but then again, I've never lived in a ghetto or Africa.

OP, to me, a racist is someone who dislikes another race, or perhaps feels their race is superior. Prejudice is having a preconceived idea about someone or something without any logical reason (not necessarily racial). And stereotyping is generalizing based on your (or other's) experiences (not necessarily racial).

Identifying that (based on your experience), many crimes are committed by blacks does not necessarily make you a racist. If you simply feel that most or all blacks commit crimes, you may be stereotyping. If you see someone on the street and automatically think they've committed a crime because they're black, then you're prejudiced. But if you think blacks are an inferior race or dislike them as a whole due to this perception of their wayward ways, then you're a racist.

To those who are saying everyone is racist, you realize just because you're narrow-minded, it doesn't mean everyone else is, right? If it makes you feel better to believe everyone else is in "denial" because they won't admit they're racist jerk-offs like you, then more power to you. How difficult is it to deal with a person based on who they are, and not their race? Are you sexist and ageist too?

Yes, generally speaking, there are differences between races -- there are differences between genders -- there are differences between age-groups. But why do these differences make you dislike someone or a group of people?

Seriously, I never held any prejudice of any kind until I got to college and actutally and got to deal with truly trashy people (of all ethnicities, btw. I'd say I'm not so much racist as prejudiced against idiotic poor people.)
