There's a reason there's more poor black people than white; you might want to take a history class.

I am curious what you think the reason is.

It really does not matter what I think the reason is - does anyone really know for sure?

However, gamepad put it out there like there is one obvious, well-known and settled-upon reason that can be learned from a history class.

So, gamepad, what is the reason we will find by taking a history class?

MotionMan

Stop being coy. You know what he's referring to. If you disagree, just say it.

I want to know what gamepad was referring to without any hints from the peanut gallery.

Once we are sure of his position, then we will be able to intelligently discuss the subject. Before that, we are both just speculating.

MotionMan

Right, because it's so difficult to figure out which moment in history put blacks at a disadvantage.

So, would it be fair to say that you believe the following?:

"The reason there are more poor black people than white is because of slavery."

MotionMan

Yes. If Blacks weren't introduced to our country through slavery, there would only be African immigrants. African immigrants are known to be very hard working.

Edit: This is also discounting racism.

I make jokes about race, so I figure at the point where it all seems funny is the point where I am not racist at all.

Perhaps you need to re-read your history. Whites are by far not the first to enslave blacks.

Interesting. Are non-immigrants known to be not very hard working?

I'm definitely not racist, but I am certainly prejudiced against the "urban/hip hop" culture regardless of skin color. If someone is going to act thug life with a shirt that looks like a dress, pants around their knees, a ball cap 4 sizes too big pulled down over their ears, and can't and won't speak proper English ... I don't like that person.

I'm not racist, I just hate ___________ :D

First, I'll never make a decision and let race/gender/etc. get in the way.

Second, based on statistics alone, I think there are generalizations that you can draw about groups of individuals... birds of the same feather flock together :p

As I said, I'll never make a decision with race/gender/etc. having any impact at all.

While I would never go out of my way to avoid someone of a different race, I still see many stereotypes ring true and therefore am probably a racist. I have befriended many people of different races because I always judge someone on a person by person basis, so I am not really a bigot. One of my black friends used to make fun of me because I like mayonnaise. He claims it is a white person thing.

1/2 Caucasian, 1/2 Chinese. Went to 3 schools growing up all of which were of fairly mixed demographic. I'd say if anything I'm hyper anti-racist. I see racism in too many places.

Actually that has little to nothing to do with it. Blacks in other countries which didn't endure slavery are often still poor, and Africa itself is a pretty poor place. Meanwhile other races of people which were completely victimized even in more recent times have managed to pick themselves back up and become successful.

Your excuse is a cop out.

Why can Jewish and Asian immigrants from war-torn countries come here with nothing but the clothes on their backs, get an education and become successful within 1 or 2 generations, while blacks seem content blaming their failures on what happened 300 years ago?

Eh, after visiting Cairo I think I'd feel 10x safer there than I would going to south or westside Chicago or the ghettos of LA. I guess Cairo isn't exactly "Arab" but most Americans probably couldn't tell the difference. In fact, everyone there seemed very nice despite how poor most of them were. I'd say my only real prejudice is against people who dress like thugs. That itself is a stereotype though.

most of them are. but all that's needed is one that isn't and you immediatly make preconceptions about the rest.

This is the problem with the word "racist", its definition has been mangled.

Jesse Jackson himself has said that if he had the choice between walking down a dark street at night and passing a couple of young white teenagers versus a couple of young black teenagers, he'd choose the former. Is he racist? While it's debatable in his case ;), the key word here is prejudiced, he's making a prejudgement about the situation based on what he knows to be true.

I believe certain ethnicities have genetic advantages and disadvantages when compared to other ethnicities. For example, being genetically superior at distance running or genetically inferior resisting certain skin conditions. Although individual variation within these groupings may be greater than the variation between groupings, it is still certainly there.
