Are you racist?

Unfortunately, I'd have to say that I am. It comes from growing up in a all white neighborhood, going to a school with 2 black students out of 450, going to a high school where the only black students attending were on sports scholarship or some other form of financial aid, and I am now living in the middle of low income housing right off of campus.

Last week I was called a "punk ass white bitch" because some idiot black guy did a U-turn in the middle of the road and almost hit me when I was riding my bike.

It also doesn't help that the majority (read: 95%) of crimes committed on and near campus are by black people.

How did you come to be a racist with so few experiences with black people? (I also went to an all-white school)

I've grown up all over the country with all types of people. It's generally the personal traits I hate in people. Sometimes, particular negative traits are more prevalent in certain racial groups. If noticing these traits and commenting on them makes me a racist, then so be it. See sig for further clarification.

I probably am in a limited sense.

I definitely have no hatred or prejudice toward people of color (as cliched as it sounds, some of my closest friends are black and Asian), but I definitely have a certain level of skepticism toward young black men I don't personally know. This is essentially pragmatism in my view, in that young black men commit a hugely disproportionate number of violent crimes, but I can't seriously deny that I am using their race as a shorthand way of judging them, and that's racist IMO.

this is a tricky thing for you to admit. just because you didn't have exposure to black people in your neighborhood or high school doesn't mean you have to think less of them.

it sounds like the black guy who doesn't know how to drive has racist issues if he yelled that to you.

as far as the crime, if it is a fact that 95% of the the crimes committed near campus are by black people then it's just a fact. how many crimes are reported there?

No, but I grew up in a pretty liberal state.

I imagine my vote would be different if I grew up in, let's say, West Virginia.

I honestly believe I'm not racist in the least (but I know for a fact the Jews are.)

It's hard not to be racist when you've been racially abused by another group. Of course you're going to harbor some anger in that case.

And like somebody else above said

That just about sums it up right there.

Unfortunately this is a product of the country we live in. The melting pot theory, while it looks nice on paper, is not working as well in the real world. You cannot expect people of totally different upbringings to "bond" with each other. I don't think racism is the correct term for this. More like a lack of understanding and communication. If you don't believe me on this, look at a country where race is not an issue (several of the Asian nations come to mind).

That's funny because I formed my view on various minorities based on living in a minority neighborhood and going to school with blacks, Asians and others (including a LOT of Filipinos).

If I am a racist, it is based on experience, not ignorance.

I grew up in a very liberal area of the country. I still am probably "racist" (depending on how you define it).

Like most, my honest answer is sometimes. Although, I tend to be more of what has been coined a "classist" than a racist. When it does happen, I find myself hating on lower class white people just as often as I hate on lower class blacks and hispanics.

No shit. Anybody voting "No" is a liar or delusional.

i can say pretty honestly that im not racist. i am a mex/ german half breed that was raised by my german mom and a black stepdad. lived in soouth phoenix, went to a school that was predominantly black and mexican. there were more native americans than white people there. i didnt get abused by people, or singled out for being white at all. i moved to a rich school in tempe fro high school (kids drove better cars than most adults do) and still didnt get messed with really. i was still poor, just lived in a better neighborhood. i still dont jump to conclusions based on color or appearance, and im just as likely to talk to anyone that approaches me in a public place.

i voted no. im pretty sure im not a racist.
