I'm amazed at how many people don't seem to understand what the OP is talking about. You start slow and steady, establish a baseline and then you continue to improve upon from there. Getting the exercise part down makes it easier to change your diet, rather than the other way around IMHO.

how did that happen?
you running less? eating more?

Mostly eating more crap but I started again with weights and creatine too. However even with the +20lbs, I am not overweight but I'd like to lose about 10 lbs which would put me at 175 (I'm 6'1").

Its the way ATOT works. You could post that they sky is blue and there would be a bunch of trolls who would jump you for the statement just because they've been awaiting the next opportunity to try to boost their self-esteem.

Bicycling... I swear by it.

b1_67.jpg

I know there is a stigma with biking and what not, but trust me, you will feel so much better after biking 10 to 20 miles every other day.

When the winter hits, go to the gym.

But, there is nothing better than hitting ~15 to 20 mph on a bike, heart beating and the wind blowing across your body.

I guess there's a stigma if you're on the road wearing spandex :). I do 7-10 miles twice a week, but on trails. I'll be damned if I'm riding a bike on the roads around here.

Are you overweight? Want to shed a few pounds? Follow these simple steps to success!

Step 1: stop stuffing your fat face!
Step 2: watch the weight literally, in the figurative sense, fall off!

The real issue is we have conditioned ourselves to hate discomfort, especially when it comes to hunger. Being hungry for a prolonged period of time is counter productive to ensuring we live happy, healthy lives. Which makes zero fucking sense, when you take into account women will wear the most uncomfortable of shoes for hours on end just to look good. Works the same way with diets! If you stuck with your diet for more than a day, you'd end up being much less uncomfortable from not eating 4500 calories a day.

loll

I read the Steps 1 & 2 in like a 1950's retro guy commercial voice, like in Bioshock or something.

Seriously though, wtf is this thread even doing? Hey fattie want to lose weight..? Go walk a mile?? Uhhhh no.

I bet if fat people were given chronic tonsillitis, they would lose a lot of weight.

Also when i was little, a huge german shepherd got loose. The second my fat friend saw it, he outran all of us and up over my fence. I literally say dust clouds from the trail he blazed.

Stop with the nitpick. Moonbogg is on the money here.

I was never fat, but I was a nerdy unathletic highschooler who didn't do sports. Now I run a 12:30 two mile and sit comfortably on a near max Army fitness score.

But I didn't just magically get this way. It was gradual.

Stop overthinking things, and just do. And when you can, do more. And if you hit a wall, do some research. You can overcome you!

Problem is many seriously fat people have developed significant joint problems because of their size. Telling them to engage in walking or jogging is a non-starter.

Weight loss has to come through caloric restriction first before they will have any chance at being capable of moderate amounts of physical activity.

Basically he's been eating about 2650 calories a day, every day, for 8 months straight (assumption based on average male height and weight and a sedentary lifestyle outside of the stated exercise).

I suppose you are right. I also forgot to mention that if you have no legs, this simple mile per day idea may not work for you as well. I feel like such an idiot. Silly me.
Also, if you are blind, consider taking with you a seeing eye dog.
I also forgot to mention some possible side effects. They include, but are not limited to:

Increased self esteem
Increased physical strength
Increased energy levels
Loss of fat percentage
Reduced risk of heart disease
Reduced risk of osteoporosis
Increased elasticity of the veins and arteries
Increased heart strength
et-fucking-cetera

Except, his entire premise is "go walk a mile and lose weight", which is stupid. The only way you are going to lose weight is to make a change in your diet. If he was promoting a "drink one less soda a day", it would be far more likely to succeed.

We get the idea that the walking is trivial in itself, but symbolizes a change to be made. But, it is a stupid starter.

Everyone is built differently as well. I am 5 foot 7 and about 200 pounds give or take 5 pounds. For 32 years of my life I was hoovering between 155 and 160 pounds and in good shape.

Although I am overweight now I can still look down and see my balls and have a rather "solid" look to me. In my opinion, I would like to be about 180 or 175 for my height.

I don't think you are in a bad condition based on your height and weight. Your goals are IMO very reasonable and you should go out and get it done. Nice and easy though. Long term solutions are good, right?

Why has nobody mentioned at all that this glorious advice from moonbogg should be in Health & Fitness?

We get enough of the uninformed posts there already. No thanks. A guy literally just posted in a thread you can eat as many nuts as you want and they don't count against your caloric intake. He even posted a study concerning it, even though it entirely contradicted his stance.

Who made you king of the fucking forum? Shut your mouth with your trolling in this thread already. It's getting old. You don't know everything and you don't have all of the answers. Moonbogg's point isn't brand new and he isn't saying he is 100% right for 100% of people in 100% of situations by telling them to literally go walk a mile. His underlying point is simple and easy to do, which is what people need. Someone may have been helped with this thread, so get the hell off of your high horse and contribute something useful or go find somewhere else to post please.

depends. this is actually good advice for people like me a few years ago when i first started working 100% from home. diet all you want if you only burn minimal calories you still gain weight even from "eating healty"

luckily i had a kid and it all kind of worked itself out. back to normal self.

Yeah I didn't even bother. I thought his stance was, "this guy ate a lot of nuts that put him over his cal intake amount, but gained no weight, therefore cal in < cal out isn't really a thing."

Like, nuts are some kind of magical non weight causing food... lol.

But in all seriousness, I am looking forward to reading more wonderful and insightful advice from some of ATOTs finest health and fitness experts.

And then there's this, which for some of you may be an even more critical benefit...

http://www.newyorker.com/tech/elements/walking-helps-us-think

I was reading this article recently talking about how at one time, all prominent American writers used to walk at least 5 miles a day. And how that is no longer happening - maybe that too is a factor in the lower quality of fiction these days, along with the ever increasing shallowness of the culture.
