The real internet used a web browser and was able to pick up almost any kind of cool stuff you wanted just by using a search engine. It was when almost any schmuck could get on (assuming their system and ISP was already set up for them) and find cool shit with a minimum of hassle.
I would suggest the mid 90's was the start of the real internet. Win95 was a huge boon to the regular world. Even though it was full of bugs it was a hundred times better than Win3.1. And it was a hell of a lot more accessable than DOS. It made regular people get seriously interested in home computing. One of the most important features was its ease of accessing the mysterious internet, which most folks had only dreamt of.
sorry, internet predates your precious web browser. and I consider the advent of http the downfall of the internet. It was bad enough that billions of stupid people were talking nonsense locally, now they have an international soapbox to stand on.
