/flamesuit, but I do like it. Sure, it would be nice to be somewhere warm/pretty, but I'm near family and in a young/fun area. And it's relatively cheap.

northern virginia area

bad: traffic, parking lots, law enforcement, property costs/taxes, coldish winters (not compared to other places, but still too cold for my tastes). lack of beach. neighbors. politics/politicians. none of my family near by. in laws.

good: DC is a great city to live near. public schools (eventually for kids if they happen). proximity to airports. employment opportunities for wife and i (prob biggest factor). in laws.

No I do not like it. I made the mistake of living where I want to work, not working where I want to live :(

I can relate to that...sort of. Work is what brought us to Kahleeforneeya in 1987...and what kept us here. Nowadays, work is pretty sparse.

Plusses:
No snow unless I want to drive to see it. I'm less than 2 hours from both the snow and the ocean.

2 hours or less from Yosemite N.P., Sacramento, Fresno, San Francisco, San Jose, a bit over 3 hours away from Sequoia/Kings Canyon N.P. and Lake Tahoe, and just over 4 hour drive to Reno. In 6 hours or less I can be in downtown L.A., and about 7-7.5 hours to San Diego.

Work. That's what brought me here 23 years ago. It was a supermarket full of jobs I wasn't out of work unless I wanted to be, and even then, I got called with job offers...well, that plus is gone.

Negatives:
High cost of living. Although considerably less than other parts of Kahleeforneeya, it's still much higher than some places where I'd prefer to live.

Ground-Zero for the housing bubble meltdown. Affects not only the chance to sell the house if/when we want to move, but also the job picture in the area.

While this area is fairly conservative, it's still part of Kahleeforneeya with the super-liberal state assembly spending like a drunken sailor on liberty.

"beautiful ray of sunshine Central" VERY HIGH number of illegal immigrants due to the ag economy here. Most of the crime in the news is from Mexican gangs...and often, illegal immigrants.

Crime. We were the #1 Car Theft Capital of the USA for several years running. IIRC, we've lost that dubious title...but are still in the top 5. The gangs run parts of the city and county. Last year, the local sheriff arrested a gang-banger...and a crowd made mostly of gang-bangers took him away from the deputy.

Weather. While having no snow and no real cold weather is a plus, we have very hot summers and damp foggy winters. I'd ALMOST rather have to deal with snow than the thick tule fog in the winter...at least with snow, you can USUALLY see what you're going to run into...:p

Damn, really? I dislike the government too, but everything else you listed as "dislike" is better in your neighbourhood than mine.

Let's trade neighbourhoods :p:D.

I think I'm just annoyed at everything right now and am taking it out on my city. I have wanted to move for quite a while now though. :hmm:

Yep Molesto really sucks. At least it's better than Stockton and Fresno, of course that's not really saying much.

Anyone in Vancouver like to chime in? This seems to be ATOT's bandwagon town.

Boston

Likes: A small perfect sized cosmopolitan city. Nation's top colleges and grad schools are densely packed here and around Cambridge. Good and diverse food compared to rest of the country. Lots of fun bars. Awesome sports town (celtics, redsox, pats, bruins)

Dislikes: It is small. You can walk the whole city in one day. Cuisine is not good enough if you're into ethnic food. A mere 4-hour drive to NYC trumps it all. Winter is just disgusting here. You are looking at about 7-8 months of winter year round. After Christmas and New Year's, it's nothing but darkness and bone-chilling misery all the way into late April.

I like St. Louis, it is stable. I would love to live in the mountains though in a more remote area, even if it means lowering my standard of living substantially.

If I live here forever I will keep my means small but will expand to a satellite home/cabin which will eventually become my final resting place after retirement

I actually really like middle TN. But damnit it has been 100 degrees every day for the past two months (or at least that is how it seems at this point).

It's usually hot here but this has been a ridiculous summer. Of course last winter was ridiculously cold. Balance!

What do you like and dislike about where you live?

No, not at all.

I live in Jacksonville, NC. There is nothing to do here. It has no culture. It is overcrowded. The weather is always hot. There is no winter. There is no autumn.

I could go on.

I miss Chicago.

Toronto:

Like: Exceptionally diverse and welcoming city, safe and clean, great food/entertainment and lots of jobs.

Dislike: Weather - hot, humid summers and cold, nasty winters. Exceptionally bland natural surroundings - no mountains, oceans, beaches or anything other than endless gently rolling farm land.

After going on a road trip across Canada and to California a few weeks ago, I can tell you without a doubt that Toronto is one of the worst places to live.

It is a diverse city, but that isn't exactly a good thing imo. Many of the cultures here keep to themselves and each one is trying to rule the other out.

You have it on the money though with the surroundings and weather. There is nothing here of true beauty. Also pollution is bad, smog central.

I would pick any other place to live in my road trip, I envy anybody on the west coast...

Like: the rural aspect - quiet, none of the neighbors bother me, it snows in the winter

Dislike: proximity to family (2 miles), proximity to friends (300+ miles), prevalent homophobic attitude, lack of broadband, lack of cell signals, lack of gay population, lack of intellect, abundance of wild animals, the heat in the summer... basically everything

You, too, should move to Chicago.

Don't like: Small and no yard (Condo).

Like: In town, pool/jacuzzi/workout room/games room (pool, foosball, etc), HUGE party room, secured building, security guard/CCTV, stylish condo, lots of guest parking (a premium here in Honolulu).

But you get use to it...NOT!! However Fall is rather pleasant.

Another bad thing about Boston and the areas around it is that the drivers here absolutely suck as do the roadways. Plus most towns charge you a yearly fee to park on the streets and tow your cars on day where they clean the streets if you're parked there.

Yeah, but you have the Big Dig. How cool is that?

I like my neighborhood and a bit of the city, the mall loses its touch after 3 or 4 visits. The summers are nice but the winters are horribad.

If I could move I'd like to live in Boston, Phoenix or Vancouver.

Like that it's not a big city, dislike that it's grown to be too big of a town. (pop: 40,000)

Like that it's not too warm/sunny/dry/humid, dislike that it doesn't get enough snow and is getting warmer.

Like that it's got a lot of 'country', dislike that it doesn't have much 'culture'.

Like that it's fairly progressive AND fairly libertarian, dislike that it's been invaded by ultra-partisans on all sides.

Like that it's fairly cheap cost of living compared to other places, dislike that it's been catching up to those other places.

No. I've lived here all my life, I'm more than ready to GTFO.
Always had difficulty finding a job here, since the day I turned 16. I've spent more time working outside of town, than in town.
Now that my skills consist of almost entirely IT, there's a large lack of qualifying positions in a commutable distance. With Chicago's abundance of qualifying positions outside of my commutable distance, with condition my car is in, I'm pretty much screwed.
I finish school end of this month. I have a cousin in Cali, and a friend in Vegas that could help me get set up if I relocated. So I'm starting to look more into job opportunities in that direction.
