Are you happy with America?

I have read P&N for a long time now. I post some, but mostly i read and listen to the political hacks on both sides in here. Pretty much every post is here is negative and mostly rightfully so, but everyone seems angry at the world or the US in particular. I am 37 and have seen a lot change in my years here in the US, and for the worse in my opinion. Here are some of the bigger issues of late:
  • Illegal immigartion is out of control. If you are not here to assimilate into our culture but instead are here to exploit it and send money back to your home country then leave.
  • The war on terror seems it is going to be an ongoing affair, probably forever at this point.
  • Corporate america buying politicians to get there agenda across all so someones stock can go up a quater point.
  • Outsourcing of jobs is destroying the middle and lower class in America.
  • PC has run amuck. Call a spade a spade and get on with it. Stop with the coddling of the people who get butt hurt of every little word.
  • Is there such a thing as an honest politician anymore? They all seem to say what you either want to hear or what they need to get elected and then never follow through on those promises.
  • Unions that are too powerful with big contracts with the gubment. I have no problems with unions in general but they too can amass too much power.
  • Losing civil liberties slowly to things like the Patriot Act.
  • Our national debt is rediculous and most likely will never be under control again. Same goes for many states now.
  • Healthcare system is a joke anyway you spin it. I dont know the overall solution to this wether is be UHC or what not. But something needs to change and fast.
  • Helicopter parenting and parents being the childs friend instead of a parent. Everyones a winner bullshit mentality needs to stop. You can become their friend when they are an adult, until then be a parent and teacher.
  • Seems a lot of people are not proud to be American anymore. I know i have my days where i just want to run off to some nice insignificant country and live in peace away from all this crap the world has turned into.
  • Personal responsibility and accountability. What is that you might ask? LOL
I know that is a lot of rambling and im not the best writer when trying to get some points across. It is more a hodge podge or ideas all across the board.

So are you happy with America or does this country piss you off most of the time and you feel powerless to stop its eventual demise? What can be done to make this country great again?

  • Illegal immigartion is out of control. If you are not here to assimilate into our culture but instead are here to exploit it and send money back to your home country then leave. It's hard for poor, working adults to learn a new language. It can be done but it is hard. The problem is the enforcement. People will exploit whatever is in their interest.
  • The war on terror seems it is going to be an ongoing affair, probably forever at this point. Time to bring the troops back home.
  • Corporate america buying politicians to get there agenda across all so someones stock can go up a quater point. Agree. Stupid Supreme Court saying corporations are people -- makes me sick
  • Outsourcing of jobs is destroying the middle and lower class in america. Agree
  • PC has run amoke. Call a spade a spade and get on with it. Stop with the coddling of the people who get butt hurt of every little word. Need an example.
  • Is there such a thing as an honest politician anymore? They all seem to say what you either want to here or what they need to get elected and then never follow through on those promises. The media is doing a terrible job at looking into candidates.
  • Unions that are too powerful with big contracts with the gubment. I have no problems with unions in general but they too can amass too much power. OK I guess. You should give an example of where their power goes amuk.
  • Losing civil liberties slowly to things like the Patriot Act. Agree
  • Our national debt is rediculous and most likely will never be under control again. Same goes for many states now. This is true and frightening
  • Healthcare system is a joke anyway you spin it. I dont know the overall solution to this wether is be UHC or what not. But something needs to change and fast. IMO we need to look at HC as a right not as a business. How it is implemented -- I don't know.
  • Helicopter parenting and parents being the childs friend instead of a parent. Everyones a winner bullshit mentality needs to stop. Beats me -- I am not a parent.
  • Seems a lot of people are not proud to be American anymore. I know i have my days where i just want to run off to some nice insignificant country and live in peace away from all this crap the world has turned into. Let's Face it: we've become an overindulgent mass of uneducated Homer Simpsons. Nothing to be proud of.

The US is not a better place than it was before Bush -- that's what I think. Had Al Gore won maybe we'd have different problems but I doubt we'd be in Iraq & Afghanistan & have had a hands-off financial policy.

Outsourcing of jobs is destroying the middle and lower class in america.

This is such a bullshit lie. Why do people insist on propagating it?

Additionally, MANY jobs that had been outsourced in the past have come back for a variety of reasons, not the least of which was quality.

Consider, though. How much more expensive would EVERYTHING be if HP had to pay their Teir 1 grunts $8.50/hr to answer the phone and read a script? The cost of support would absolutely skyrocket, thus computers would be WAY more expensive, and every single industry that used computers would have significantly higher costs.

If you want to enact serious protectionism, you need to lower the minimum wage. Period. The only jobs that are left being outsourced on a large scale are those that are completely and totally unskilled...i.e. jobs that it doesn't make sense to pay someone in America minimum wage to do. Until people in the U.S. get rid of their sense of entitlement and realize that they should only be paid what they're worth, outsourcing these unskilled positions is the only economically viable course of action.

agree with all points.
this country needs change but unfortunately it's not going to happen. govt has become too large, there's too many people to cater to. all politicians care about is a vote.
they are not doing what's best for the country but best for themselves.

I'm so glad the Dems are in control to show us just how really great they are. My gosh...I almost wet my pants everytime I think about it. Everything is peachy...just peachy.

Accept certain inalienable truths, prices will rise, politicians will philander, you too will get old, and when you do you'll fantasize that when you were young prices were reasonable, politicians were noble and children respected their elders.

What does this have to do with the Dems in particular? Most of things are a country problem not tackled by the Repubs or Dems.

Oh wait. The partisian hack i wrote about in the first paragraph. You fall into that. Nevermind.

I'm 25 and I already fantasize about the time when that was the case.

This country is going to hell in a handbasket faster than I ever thought possible.

You think im a repub? LOL These issues transcend political parties. They are an American issue that needs to be dealth with. Maybe an overthrown of the government is order. Maybe that is the only way to change our country since so far no one here has any real ideas. Just happy to go along with the status quo and bitch about it.

I have never voted republican. Usually 3rd party. I hate the two main parties.

Glad to hear it. You can recognize a large source of the problem, and are part of the solution. Bother your Congresscritters. Remind them of what they're supposed to be doing.

Like many formerly great nations, the short reason is, times changed and we did not adapt to the changes.

My sarcasm was directed towards hacks like Dave and I probably should have quoted him in hindsight.

I don't think you don't understand where I'm coming from...I'm equally unhappy with 8 years of Bush and especially unhappy with both parties who cannot work together towards meaningful solutions to very difficult problems.

Dems right now hold the power and they're starting to make Bush look good. They promised so much...and they have delivered so little. So to answer your question...no, I'm not happy with America. And if that comes across to you as somehow partisan...then so be it.

I've lived through a few crisis, race riots, would nixon obey court, hyperinflation,

basically, things are pretty good right now.

immigration isnt a real issue, just haters. immigration is a plus.
terrorism- pretty insignificant really, and as long as we dont spend the summer at the ranch we seem on top of it.
