Wow, you're an ass. Seriously, is that your opinion? You do realize that in order for "going green" to work, MASSES of people have to do it? Great, I'm glad you are sooooo great that you've been doing it your whole life - it doesn't mean squat, kid. And then when you attack other people for "hopping on the bandwagon" and making it actually worthwhile? You're HURTING the environment, jackass!

Congratulations go out to Canai, he is inching us one step closer to $10 gas and no polar ice caps!

Anyway, as for myself, I have not really made any conscious steps, no. My life as it is doesn't hurt the environment that much, and a bunch of hippies chastising me for driving to work isn't going to convince me to take the bus. Then again, if I did, pretentious pricks like Canai would yell at me for "hopping on the bandwagon". So I guess I'll keep driving.

I guess I'll reply to one of these posts. Sure, it was an assholish thing to say, but I often take for granted my parents always making me recycle and keep lights off and never litter and just generally be a hippie. It's good that people are 'going green' but it seems to me the people who are just now doing it are only going to do it as long as it's fashionable. I'm willing to bet a LOT of people are 'going green' because suddenly gas is so expensive. Buying a bike to ride instead of driving sure saves a hell of a lot of gas money. I love how money motivates people to act, while they seem to lack any genuine concern for the environment.

How long have recycling education programs been going on? Over a decade, at least where I live. What about buying products in environmentally friendly packaging? I remember seeing news reports on it when I was in middle school.

While it's great that people are suddenly aware that they are being wasteful, I fear too many of the sheeple will only do it as long as it suits their needs.

So you know what? Call me an eco snob, a hippie, an asshole, whatever. But I actually care enough to make a lifestyle out of 'being green' and I always have. Good for the people who are 'going green' but they really should have been green. The only difference now is fuel is incredibly expensive and 'green' is a big catchphrase being thrown around by the media. People who are just realizing that they can be green have had their heads so far up their asses for the past 10+ years it's not even funny.

So yeah. I'm an asshole. I don't give a fuck. I'm speaking the truth, and getting attacked for it.

Well, I'm not a dirty hippie, but now that I think about it I am sorta doing more stuff than alot in terms of having a small carbon foot print, but not really by choice. I drive a car which gets 28/35 MPG and live in a one bedroom apartment so I can't be having all that much of a carbon footprint, and I am working on a nuclear construction project, so my job is about reducing carbon emissions too.

Let me give you an analogy.

I've never smoked before. Don't understand why people do it. Clearly, not smoking is the "right" thing to do, that we've been "educated" on for years, right?

If someone quits smoking, the equivalent attitude would be to say "psh, I've never smoked. Find another bandwagon, don't bother quitting". Doesn't make much sense, does it?

Same can apply here. So what if they should have been doing it all along? So what if their motives are money, or because it's "hip"? They're still doing the right thing NOW, and that should be encouraged.

By looking down on people who start being more envronmentally conscious, all you're doing is discouraging others (and them) from doing the same. Is that what you want? It's great that you've been doing the right thing for so long, but clearly not everyone has. So should they change their ways, or continue being in the wrong, because they weren't so lucky to have been raised as well as you?

Getting through at all?

Yeah I understand that completely, but my big problem is all the people who will conserve energy only as long as it's cheaper, and then go back to polluting or whatever when it's financially viable. It just really bothers me that people take notice of the world around them only when there are dollar signs to be had. I have the feeling this whole 'green' movement will go the way of organics, with companies and people doing the absolute minimum to get qualified as 'green'.

The people who are actually making lifestyle changes are great, but those doing it just for money, I dunno.

We've always taken recycling in when it was a pain in the ass to do so. Now it's easy.
We use recycled building materials when it is practical.
My wife and I are planning our retirement home and actively looking for property. The house will employ passive and active solar heating, and possibly PV as well.

It has jumped the shark and continues to do so.

I've never lived a life of excessive waste, wtf should I make my life full of inconveniences so I can jump on the new bandwagon?

Pretty much my sentiment.

Being inconvenienced isn't the point of 'going green'. I don't like the phrase either, but making it an issue is a good idea because it will make people aware of it. You tough guys can talk about how lame it is but in the end you are just being a moron for no reason. It wouldn't put you out to turn off your computer at night and turn your lights off, and that kind of stuff will make a difference.

It's actually pretty sad and pathetic that people can be so cavalier about being wasteful for no reason. Society is filled with dumbasses so I shouldn't be surprised but I still am.

I'm nowhere near as wasteful as most of the people in this nation. My sentiment is that I've always been doing "green" things other than the computer. I even reuse paper towels to wipe the counter-tops and sink. It's how I've been raised from my grandmother.

So I think it's just as sad if if you're assuming just because someone says they're not changing habits means that they're on the other extreme.

I actually think it's even more sad and pathetic that it takes a near crisis and a trend to get people to think, research, and manufacture more efficient ways to do things. But this is coming from someone who was scolded as a kid for leaving a lightbulb on during daylight or the tv running when he's not in the room.

I compost my food waste, keep the thermostat at levels to minimize electricity use, drive less, use CFL bulbs (granted, I bought them before the whole mercury thing came out), use the desktop less (more lappy use), and drive less. Of course, I have other motives as I'm broke anyway... :/

I'm currently planning in my head and making sketches of the house I want to build. I'll be incorporating or building later, every green technology I know of.

Solar water heater
Either solar panels, windmill, or both. I want to generate a surplus of electricity year round.
Large thermal walls. All exterior walls 1ft+ thick and filled with some thermal mass (dirt, concrete, etc)
Windows and roof line positioned to heat in winter and shade in summer
Insulation out the wazzu

you get the idea
