To a bunch of freshman students, to them their thoughts of atronomy may be extremely smart and looked at as higher thinking, while to a seasoned astronomer (astronomist?) they would look ignorant at their simple thoughts and knowledge of the sky.

While it's true that much is relative when you consider things like ignorance and belief systems, so many people use this as a defense against logical debate. It's like when faced with logic everyone resorts to "I can believe whatever I want, I don't have to provide any proof" Once again that statement is true, you can believe whatever you want, but denying any evidence (or lack thereof) that runs counter to your beliefs is in fact ignorance.

Edit: Both sides (theists, athiests) are guilty of this. From an agnostic point of view you both look remarkably similar.

I see where your coming from with this, and have no counter-argument to this becuase I know this happens. I am guilty of this at times.

All you agnostics should be ashamed of your noncommittal lifestyle. If I'm wrong we're both going to hell, but at least I'll go with a good conscience.

Didn't you read the bible? One can repent and accept at any time and be spared the misery of Hell. Only those who truly belong there will be there, disbelief wouldn't get in the way of that.

It's rather ignorant to be Athiest. I'm Agnostic.

Hows being an atheist at all ignorant?

How can you be 100% certain that there's no supreme being? Were you there when the earth was created?

Last time I checked, there's no "percentage tag" associated with the technical definiton of atheism:

a - the - ism

without - god - belief

My point is you can't be SURE that there is no God.

Evidence proves existence
No evidence equals non-existence
Now does belief in a fantasy equal a weak mind?

Okay, so you aren't saying there is or is not a god because you fear god? Sorry, this is the first comment I gave made on religion on these boards, and I will not do it again, but IMO I think agnostics are worse than religious people. But, I am not trying to sway anybody, to each his own, but to share my opinion I feel that religion is the unintelligent mans science, and the weak mans inner strength. Those who are undecided are even worse to me.

Yes, yes I know someone can point out the irony of my spelling or whatever but I must be going to bed soon and am tired and my typing sucks.

But, once again I respect religion and would never try and tell anyone to give it up.

I can't begin to tell you how wrong you are. Just because something hasn't been proved doesn't mean it doesn't exist.

I don't fear God. I'm saying I don't believe there is a God, simply because I have no reason to do so. It's not undecided, it's being smart and not following along on what's popular when there's no actual basis.

This is correct. It is a very well established notion that the absence of evidence does not mean evidence of absence.

So nothing exists until we find out about it? Does bear clap in the woods? Does it turn anyone on even though they're not there to hear it?

There are little men in the middle of the Earth, I declare that. And, I shall make a following of people that believe that over the years, that the little men are the creators of matter, and I will threaten them that the little men will one day surface and crush non-believers and reward the believers with gifts beyond their wildest dreams. But, you must show your devotion by digging a little hole everyday and planting food, so the little men can rise up and eat if they are hungry.

When we dig down into the Earth and find the little people I will glady give up my ideology...oh wait...

One does not define smart as sitting on a fence until the fence falls.

WTF? I think there was some attempt of cleverness that really ended up being doucheness.

I'm deeply sorry, I think I was trying to have a civilized debate until someone decided to try and turn it into a flamefest. Why use insults, when one can carry on an intelligent conversation with a retort of their own?
