Hows being an atheist at all ignorant?

How can you be 100% certain that there's no supreme being? Were you there when the earth was created?

It's amazing how many people admit that they too believe in God when they feel like they are at the end of their life.

Those people are the ones who are weak and scared, even enough to go completely against what they believe.

Sad really.

Agreed. Worse than sad, a form of selfishness really. While I feel you have the right to fill your head with any thoughts you desire, especially when you don't have many thoughts left, thinking of God means you're thinking of YOUR future, even when you'll be gone soon. Hopefully you have other people or things to take up your thoughts - loved ones, the state of the world you're leaving, anything but yourself at that time would seem to me to be a more valuable use of your limited thoughts. Remember that when you go the world will probably keep on spinning, and up until your lights go out you can have a positive impact on it. Why waste your time imagining an afterlife? While it may comfort you, it also smacks of avarice to me.

While I agree that hypocrisy is despicable, I hope you don't equate afterlife to god. I believe in an absolute truth which I call god, but I am ambivalent about an afterlife. There may or may not be one, to consider one is, I agree, avarice.

When I asked (a month or so ago) the question: "Are you religious?" the poll came to 31 yes, 54 no before the thread was baleeted.

I really do hope our consciousness continues to exist in some form after we die, but I think the concept of "heaven" is a product of wishful thinking.

Having our consciousness contiuning to exist would be wonderful and great. Being reborn would also be really cool, but sadly it will never happen.

BTW: love the siggy

Saying it will never happen is an assertion that you can't logically make any more than the religious crowd can logically say it always happens. That's why I don't subscribe to either philosophy. Basically if you don't have enough information to support either argument then the logical place to be is on the fence.

So then you also should say that believing in a deity of some sort is also ignorant.

No I was not there when the earth was created, but science was.

Your beliefs are all you and nobody else, so in my mind yes I am 100% certain that there is no supreme being. But, on the contrary, I could not prove it to you, only explain the way I feel about the subject.

Last time I checked, there's no "percentage tag" associated with the technical definiton of atheism:

a - the - ism

without - god - belief

Er, my belief may be that the sky is green, but, alas, it is not. Who knows what "God" did, if he did exist (I personally, do not believe he does, but I leave open the possiblity). Maybe he created this world with the intention to leave no "evidence." Who knows?

My point is you can't be SURE that there is no God.

It's no more ignorant than being a Theist. Truth of the matter is theres no conclusive evidence for either side, so its really just personal preference between two plausible ideologies. If anything, Agnostics are just indecisive. :p

Why was it closed? Were you guys making fun of people or something?

Personally on this thread (so far) I see nothing we are doing wrong. We are merely explaining the theories of our thoughts in a mature mannor that doesnt break a single rule.

You see thats my point. A belief is in the mind of the beholder. If you truely believe the sky is green (not the greatest exaple for my argument), then it is yours and what you think. Belief in something can only exist in the one who thinks it.

That doesn't make it not igorant. I can think that all black people are pigs (once again, just an example), but that confirms my igorance.

so if a person believes in no god or the absence of a god, they believe in nothing correct? wouldnt that still be believing in something? i think its a no win situation. if you believe or dont believe you are still choosing a direction of belief. its like they are both religions of their own, one called believers, one called non belivers, but both are believing something to be true.

so even those that dont believe in a creator still believe.

Well it's not like I'm trying to decide whether I want quiznos or burger king for lunch. I'm trying to decide whether I have an immortal soul and an omniscient, omnipotent benefactor who is responsible for my existance, or if I'm the culmination of n number of chemical reactions and that's it.

It's a BIG deal man. Both propositions are things that shouldn't be accepted out of hand.

I also believe that ignorance is not a set in stone form. To a bunch of freshman students, to them their thoughts of atronomy may be extremely smart and looked at as higher thinking, while to a seasoned astronomer (astronomist?) they would look ignorant at their simple thoughts and knowledge of the sky.
