Just want to know how much of the board is atheist. I added a poll for nice easy viewing and allows for anonymity. There can be discussion if someone wills it, but I'm not trying to start any sort of war.

I'M JUST CURIOUS!!

Also, to keep this thread up you may want to bump it if it gets silent. I dont expect it too, becuase of peoples strong feelings, but...

Come on man, nobody claims to be agnostic anymore. Give it a little more thought and you'll be confident enough to call yourself an atheist. You can't be burned at the stake anymore, plus chics dig decisive guys.

No. I have a firm belief in God. It's amazing how many people admit that they too believe in God when they feel like they are at the end of their life.

Bah I wish I'd never heard of religion. One less unknowable thing to worry about.

Those people are the ones who are weak and scared, even enough to go completely against what they believe.

Sad really.

That, or they were denying what they knew to be true throughout their lifetime. Even sadder.

The only reason that someone would admit something at the end of their life when it doesn't matter anymore is that they know/knew that they were wrong in the way that they lived their life, or they had a pretty big suspicion of such. Therefore, they are attempting to rectify their knowledge of the fact that they know in their heart that there is a God by making things right with Him before they go and see Him.

God (or some "higher power" or powers that we label as God) may exist. However, given that there is NO EVIDENCE WHATSOEVER to support that, I see no point in making any effort to believe in such.

I really do hope our consciousness continues to exist in some form after we die, but I think the concept of "heaven" is a product of wishful thinking.

Agreed. Worse than sad, a form of selfishness really. While I feel you have the right to fill your head with any thoughts you desire, especially when you don't have many thoughts left, thinking of God means you're thinking of YOUR future, even when you'll be gone soon. Hopefully you have other people or things to take up your thoughts - loved ones, the state of the world you're leaving, anything but yourself at that time would seem to me to be a more valuable use of your limited thoughts. Remember that when you go the world will probably keep on spinning, and up until your lights go out you can have a positive impact on it. Why waste your time imagining an afterlife? While it may comfort you, it also smacks of avarice to me.

Having our consciousness contiuning to exist would be wonderful and great. Being reborn would also be really cool, but sadly it will never happen.

BTW: love the siggy
