Are you all in the computer industry?

I am not in the industry although sometimes I think I am because of all the info I acquire from following it. Anyone else here not in the computer industry?

That's because there are people that are computer techs that REALLY shouldn't be computer techs... they don't have the analytical mind for it.

Why doesn't it count? Typically you'll use a CAD/CAM package before you even look at the CNC. I think it counts.

edit: I'm personally curious about PLCs and robotics.

A lot of industries uses computers for their work, but that does not necessarily make them part of "the computer industry".

My dad is a machinist and he programs CNC machines all the time. He's a machinist, not in the computer industry. Also, he never uses a CAD/CAM program to make the parts. He programs them on the control panel of the machine.

I think a good definition of "the computer industry" would be that the computer industry focuses on the computers themselves, and doesn't just use them as a tool at their place of work.

So if you work in an office as an accountant and use a computer everyday, you are not in the computer industry, you're in the financial industry. But if you work in the same office and your job is to maintain and fix those computers and/or maintain their network, you're in the computer industry, since the computers themselves are your primary focus.
