Are you afraid of using the telephone?

StageLeft

No Lifer
I know that a lot of people who are not even all that shy seem terrified of using a telephone for things even as small as ordering a pizza or calling a cab. Why is this? Are you such a person and if so how do you feel about it? Do you force yourself to use the phone to try to overcome this fear?

no i just hate using the phone. i hate talking on the phone, i hate having to call anyone. i used to work in a call center too...i still don't know how i put up with it for the nine months i did before being promoted.

I'm not afraid of the phone, I just never answer it. I'd rather turn the ringer off than hear the moron on the other end. It's usually somebody calling for my moron roommate, who shares a line with me; or some mastercard solicitation. I'm sick of it. Note that I don't have caller id, nor an answering machine. People who know me know full well not to try and call me if they need to contact me.

So doesn't that mean you're afraid of it?

I used to be in highschool and even my freshman year of college. I would not eat rather than call and order a pizza if thats what it came down too.

i was like that for a lot of things, when i was little i wouldtn go up the register at mcdonalds becuase i was so shy.

since then i've changed a lot, and now talkingn on the phone doesnt bother me at all (hell, i use at least 3000 minutes on my cell phone plan each month)

When I was young I hated calling people - it felt much like public speaking feels now.

I grew out of it though, & I do phone support for a living now.

I am the answering machine leaving MASTER!!!!!!!!!!!! I'm way better on phone than in person. In person I generally urinate myself and keep my eyes locked on the ground with a face so red it would make rudolph jealous!

j/k 😀

(*Sniff sniff* Be strong, franguinho, be strong, its all over now, all over, you can do this...)

Erm... *voice breaks* well it h-has been very hard f-for me b-but ive managed t-to overcome my terrifying fear of t-t-telephones recently *starts crying hysterically* IT WAS SO DAMN HARD. *sniff*
I couldnt have done it without my friends and family who were there for me and gave me the strength i needed to fend off this evil fear.

😉

(i'd elaborate more but im in a rush right now...😀)

I used to be like that, but then somehow I got a job as a teledata rep for ADP where I had to take payroll information over the phone. I got over it real fast. Now I do technical support for a software company over the phone a lot, so it doesn't bother me at all anymore. I do hate doing tech support over the phone though. Nothing worse than having to go "OK, now go to the start menu. No. No....it's the thing in the lower left corner that says "Start" on it."

My wife's kind of like that sometimes. She absolutely hates to call and order pizza, talk to a repairman, etc. She doesn't have a problem picking up the phone if it's ringing or answering, but she rarely initiates a call to anyone other than family or friends. She usually talks me into doing it instead. It's a little weird, but I'm sure I have my eccentricities too.

LOL, every time the phone rings I cringe in terror, what clueless end user is calling me
now? 😀

Oh right. It does. 😀

Didn't quote properly. 🙂

BTW, I have no problems ordering pizza and calling a cab.

I hate/am afraid of using the phone when calling customer service or tech support of any kind.

no i don't think of it as "afraid" of it. it means i would rather not use it. i find it pointless. i'll call the pizza place if we are going to order. but if someone calls and i don't feel like talking, i won't answer. if you want to talk to me that bad, come over or lets get together for lunch or coffee. only people i talk to on the phone really are my mom and dad back home and once in a while one of my sisters.

it's more of a 'leave me alone' thing than a afraid thing. and i don't feel a need to change it. i did the call center thing...and i was good at it. but now that i don't have to take calls, i like my job that much better.

I only answer/talk on the phone if the caller I.D. shows me someone I feel like talking to(very rare 😉 ) other than that I treat it like a pressure sensitive bomb.

i absolutely hate phones. it takes a lot of preparing to do before i make any phone calls. and as far as calling women....pftt, it takes me at least a month to get the balls to do that.🙁

i find it easier to just icq people than use the phone. i ususally only talk to my best friend on the phone when "i have so much stuff i cant possibly type it all" and a couple of my friends who dont have the internet. and like if im out my cell phone.

*kat. <-- all about icq.

Agreed, except for the ICQ part. I prefer MSN Messenger because ICQ is suck. 🙂
