Just curious. Half of my family is like this (including me), and the other half isnt. This is including my parents. Was curious since I saw the thread about the guy hanging himself who was described as a "loner" and think its weird how some people are loners and are ok with it and others are not. Discuss.

Um, why do you think I have nearly 30k posts across the various forums I visit?

I wouldn't describe myself as a loner, I just like engaging with people on my terms. I've lived alone for the last few years so I'm used to keeping myself busy, meaning I usually have something going on. That and I've found a lot of people are just superficial and/or stupid or otherwise just not fun to be around. That said when my friends I do hang out we go all out (think the record is staying up until 5 am the night before a beach trip, then all day at the beach. Exhausting but awesome.).

Every psychological exam (including professional ones) I've taken to date says I'm an extrovert, so there you go.

Yup, ok with it 95% of the time. Probably be a whole different story if there was no Internet.

It's not so much that I'm a loner more so that I rarely find people worth keeping company. Usually referred to as cynicism.

I don't think "pretend" is necessary. It just becomes the norm so you stop thinking about it.

This. I remember breaking down in tears about how I had no friends in 3rd grade. Today I don't care so much. My honest goal in life is to get a decent paying cubicle-type job of minimal human interaction, so that I may spend the rest of my time in a home all by myself, with money to spend on collections and entertainment all for myself.

Because you're a slacker...

I'm definitely an introvert...I prefer to be alone, or at the most, with only a few close friends, NEVER in a large group or crowd.

I've been married since about the 3rd fucking grade...so I can't really call myself a loner, but if something happens to my better half, I'd probably become a hermit.

Yep. I've always been like that and I don't see it changing. I'm an introvert though. I don't have a problem talking to strangers or being I'm crowds and whatnot but without a good amount of "me" time I would probably go insane.

I'm definitely a loner. Being married and moving 2k miles from home into a management position has not helped. I enjoy it mostly though.

I seem to be able to "move on" easily and never kept in touch with friends from home. My wife is the opposite of me and I hate being dragged to her friends' events....although people seem to like me, I just don't take the plunge and make an attempt to keep in contact or put any effort into making friends.

I'm a loner. Too much social interaction wears me out. I prefer to spend a good majority of my free time alone.

Definitely a loner and I like it that way. Like one of the previous posters said, I interact on my terms. I don't keep many people close. There are a lot of great people out there and I definitely enjoy having them be part of my life, but there is a lot of "fluff" out there in terms of people-quality. What's important to me is the happiness of my family, gf and myself.

I sometimes get the impression that people think I am more extroverted and social, but they are mistaken. I'm not socially oblivious or retarded and I can get along fine with people and make friends, I just don't care to surround myself with people that aren't all that meaningful to me.

I used to a loner a while back. I'm not like that anymore, but every now and then, I don't mind being on my own.

I understand that. My preferred social situation is to have 2 or 3 close friends and a significant other. That's more than enough to keep my social life occupied full time.

I definitely need my alone time. But I also like having people around.

I'm actually pretty extroverted but on the other hand being around people so much sometimes is just exhausting .

I've learned to be a loner out of necessity. How much I like it depends on my state of mind at the time; I'm rather ambiverted. Right now I spend most of my time working alone, so not liking it a lot right now.

Thats probably the most depressing shit I have read in 2012.
